Works II TVInst by Ryuichi Sakamoto: A Retro Sonic Time Capsule That Still Pops If you’ve ever wondered what happens when J-pop meets electronic beats with a dash of stage drama, Works II TVInst by Ryuichi Sakamoto is your answer. Released in 1969 (okay, maybe the dates are fuzzy since some tracks scream '80s), this album feels like flipping through an old photo album where every page hums a different tune. It’s not perfect, but it’s got that quirky charm that sticks to your brain like gum under a chair. Let’s talk genres and styles for a sec—this thing straddles pop, electronic, and even TV music. Yeah, you heard me right. This isn’t just background noise; it’s the kind of soundtrack that makes waiting for your toast to pop feel cinematic. And let’s give credit where it’s due: Shigeki Kato nailed the artwork, while mastering wizard Shuji Kitamura made sure these tunes hit crisp yet nostalgic notes. Oh, and props to Hiroshi Okura for producing something so weirdly cohesive. Now onto the meaty bits—the tracks. With titles like “NHKランドサットⅢ” and “Pampers - Akachan No Oshiri,” how could you not be curious? I’ll zoom in on two standout moments because ain’t nobody got time to review all of ‘em. First up, “Tibetan Dance Dub / 1984.” Who knew dub could sound spiritual and funky at the same time? The track builds slowly, layering synths over percussion that feels like walking barefoot across hot sand during sunset. There’s no grand climax, just this hypnotic groove that loops around your head long after it ends. Honestly, if I close my eyes, I can almost picture monks breakdancing—which is both hilarious and oddly moving. Then there’s “Snake & Lotus / 1982.” This one slithers into your ears with its sharp, staccato keys and pulsating bassline. It’s moody as heck, like sneaking out past curfew and feeling equal parts guilty and exhilarated. Every note drips with tension, making it impossible not to lean closer to hear what happens next. Bonus points for Simon Jeffes lending his magic touch here—it adds this playful unpredictability that keeps things fresh. The rest of the album follows suit, blending catchy jingles with experimental textures. Tracks like “NHKジングル” remind you why Sakamoto was such a genius at crafting earworms for TV, while deeper cuts like “Kimi Ni Tsuite” tug at heartstrings without needing words. Sure, some songs feel dated now, but isn’t that part of the fun? Listening to Works II TVInst is like rediscovering an old VHS tape—you’re never quite sure what treasures lie ahead. So yeah, this album might not change your life, but it’ll definitely make you smile or scratch your head in confusion. And honestly, isn’t that what good art should do? As I wrapped up my listen, I couldn’t help thinking about how Sakamoto managed to turn commercials and TV themes into something worth revisiting decades later. Maybe we should all pay more attention to the little things—they might just end up being timeless. Or maybe I’m just hungry. Either way, check it out. You won’t regret it.
