Marlon Brando Jean Simmons - Guys And Dolls

Review by Ben Hammond

Album Review: Guys And Dolls (1956) Alright, let’s talk about Guys And Dolls, the 1956 soundtrack that’s got some serious charm. With Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons leading the charge, this Stage & Screen gem from Germany is packed with tunes that stick to your brain like gum on a hot sidewalk. Released under Brunswick, it’s got Frank Loesser’s magic touch in the writing department and Jay Blackton waving the conductor's baton. If you’re into musicals or just love soundtracks with personality, this one’s worth a spin. Now, I gotta shout out two tracks that really stood out for me—Luck Be A Lady and If I Were A Bell. Let’s start with Luck Be A Lady. Man, this song feels like rolling the dice at 2 AM in a smoky backroom poker game. It’s smooth, kinda swaggering, and Marlon Brando absolutely owns it. Yeah, he wasn’t exactly known for his pipes, but there’s something raw and believable here. You can almost picture him leaning against a table, pleading with fate not to screw him over. It’s catchy as heck too—I caught myself humming it while making coffee this morning. Then there’s If I Were A Bell. Oh man, this one hits different. Jean Simmons brings a sweetness to it that feels genuine, not sugary. The lyrics are playful yet kinda vulnerable, like she’s daydreaming out loud about how life could be better if things went her way. There’s a moment where the orchestra swells behind her voice—it gave me goosebumps. Honestly, I didn’t expect to connect with this track so much, but here we are. One thing I love about this album is how it doesn’t try too hard to impress. These songs feel lived-in, like they’ve been part of someone’s story forever. Sure, some parts might sound dated now, but isn’t that part of its charm? Listening to it feels like flipping through an old photo album—you notice little quirks and imperfections, but those are what make it special. Here’s the kicker though: I never thought I’d say this, but Marlon Brando kinda sells these songs without even trying. Like, who knew the guy could pull off a Broadway vibe alongside all those tough-guy roles? Makes me wonder what other hidden talents he had tucked away. So yeah, whether you’re a fan of classic musicals or just looking for something nostalgic to vibe to, Guys And Dolls has got you covered. Just don’t blame me if you end up singing “Luck Be A Lady” in the shower for days. Trust me, it happens.

Listening to Brando sing - over 100 takes on each song, pasted together - is almost as bad as it is to watching his struggle to sing. Considering the source material. this is one of the worst stage to screen adaptations of a hit musical, ever put on the screen. The dancing is terrific - that's it.

I love Jean Simmons and her singing voice is pretty. Would have preferred Betty Grable to Vivian Blaine.I’m totally over Brando
in anything and his role should have gone to Frank Sinatra who remains the greatest singer in the business.

Imaging that I've never heard of this right off the bat, If someone ever told me that Marlon Brando was in a musical like this one, I'd be like...
"You expect me to believe that, THE Marlon Brando in a light-hearted musical called Guys & Dolls? HA!!

Some of the greatest dialogue in a musical ever. Every actor in this classic movie is a star. Sheer joy to watch and those people who think Marlon Brando can't sing don't know anything about music.
Also, for anyone who thinks that musicals are sissy, this (and Paint Your Wagon) is the one that best disproves that.

To hell with Channing Tatum and JGL! If they ever remade this movie; they should cast Luke Evans as Sky Masterson; Ewan McGregor as Nathan Detroit; Julianne Hough as Miss Adelaide and Sierra Boggess (Ariel in Broadway's The Little Mermaid) as Sister Sarah Brown!
