A Filetta - Medea

Review by Dave Milam

Medea by A Filetta: A Folk Odyssey That Sticks to Your Soul Let’s cut to the chase—Medea by A Filetta isn’t just another album; it’s like stepping into a time machine that spits you out somewhere between ancient Europe and your own living room. Released in 2006 under the Deda label, this gem blends folk, world, and country vibes with a European twist that feels both earthy and otherworldly. It’s not perfect—it doesn’t try to be—but there’s something raw and real about it that grabs you by the ears. Now, if I had to pick two tracks that stuck with me, it’d have to be L’invitu and U Furore. First off, L’invitu. Man, this track is haunting in all the right ways. The harmonies feel like they’re floating around you, wrapping you up in this cocoon of sound. There’s no need for flashy production or over-the-top instrumentation—it’s just voices doing their thing, but somehow it hits deeper than most songs with full bands. You can almost picture someone singing this late at night, sitting on a cliff overlooking the sea. Or maybe that’s just me being overly romantic again. Then there’s U Furore, which is basically the opposite vibe. This one’s got teeth. It starts slow, kinda sneaky-like, but then BAM—it builds into this fiery crescendo that makes you wanna throw your hands in the air and yell nonsense words. (I may or may not have done exactly that while listening.) The rhythm gets under your skin, and before you know it, you’re tapping your foot so hard you risk bruising the floor. It’s angry, passionate, and beautiful all at once—a total rollercoaster ride without the motion sickness. One thing I love about Medea is how unapologetically itself it is. These guys aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel—they’re just making music that feels honest. And honestly? That’s refreshing as hell in a world where everything’s polished to death. Sure, some parts might feel repetitive if you’re not into vocal-heavy stuff, but even then, there’s an odd charm to it. Like hearing old friends argue and laugh at the same time. So yeah, here’s the kicker: after listening to Medea, I couldn’t help but think about how much we’ve lost touch with simplicity. We’re always chasing the next big thing, the loudest beat, the flashiest hook. But albums like this remind us that sometimes, less really is more. Or maybe I’m just rambling now because I stayed up too late writing this review. Either way, give Medea a spin—you won’t regret it. Unless you hate good music, in which case…well, I don’t know what to tell ya.
