You Better Be Good My Brightest Day (Short Version) – A Funky Little Gem from The Jimmy Castor Bunch Alright, let’s talk about You Better Be Good My Brightest Day (Short Version) by The Jimmy Castor Bunch. Released in 1972 under RCA, this album is a tight slice of pure funk goodness that’ll make your hips move faster than you can say “groovy.” It’s got that unmistakable '70s vibe—brassy, bold, and just begging to be played at full blast on a Saturday night. Now, I’m not gonna lie—the title track, You Better Be Good (Or The Devil Gon’ Getcha), hits like a preacher with attitude. From the first horn blast, it grabs your soul and shakes it until you’re either dancing or questioning all your life choices. The lyrics are cheeky but sharp, kinda like when your grandma gives you side-eye for sneaking cookies. Jimmy Castor and co-writers Thomas and Pruitt knew what they were doing—they crafted something that feels both playful and kinda ominous. That line about the devil getting ya? Chills. Plus, the groove is so damn infectious, you might find yourself chanting “better be good” while brushing your teeth. Don’t ask me how I know. Then there’s My Brightest Day (Short Version), which flips the mood entirely. This one’s smoother, like butter melting over hot toast. If the first track is the wild party starter, this tune is where things settle into a cozy groove. It’s got this laid-back charm that makes you wanna lean back, sip something fizzy, and pretend you’re in some swanky club wearing bell-bottoms. Honestly, the short version leaves me wanting more—it teases you with its lush arrangement and then BAM, it’s over before you even realize it. Kinda rude, but also kinda genius. What sticks with me most is how these two tracks balance each other out. One kicks your butt into gear, and the other soothes your frazzled nerves. They’re like peanut butter and jelly—different textures, same delicious vibe. And honestly? Listening to this record feels like stepping into a time machine. You’re transported straight to an era where disco balls hadn’t taken over yet, and funk ruled the airwaves with unapologetic swagger. So yeah, if you haven’t spun this album yet, do yourself a favor and give it a whirl. Just don’t blame me if you start breaking out dance moves in public. Oh, and here’s a random thought to leave you with: Did anyone else notice that the devil probably has killer rhythm? Food for thought.

@wurtisbon4 Then you have an amazing grandfather! He is one of the most interesting vintage funk musicians, covering more different styles than others. I have almost all his records (only missing "Dimension 3" and one of the later). His 70's material is great, much of it works even today (especially this LP). Pity that he disappeared from the lists in the 80's, but almost all the 70's funkateers did.

Is he really as healthy and youthful now as he looks in recent videos?

If the horn section on this track isn't Chicago with James Pankow, Lee Loughnane, Walter Parazaider and Danny Seraphine on drums I'll eat my hat, if I wore one.
