Bach’s Orchestral Suites Nos. 2 & 4: A Baroque Beast That Still Roars in ‘97 Alright, let’s get one thing straight—this ain’t your grandma’s dusty classical record (unless she had serious taste). J.S. Bach’s Orchestral Suites Nos. 2 & 4, performed by The Academy of St Martin in the Fields under Neville Marriner, is like a punch to the gut—but in the best way possible. Released back in ’97 on EMI Classics, this sucker slaps harder than most modern music out there. It’s got that raw, intricate Baroque energy that makes you feel smarter just for listening. Now, I gotta call out two tracks because they’re burned into my brain like bad tattoos. First up: “VII Badinerie.” Holy crap, does this track rip or what? If you don’t know it, you’ve probably heard it somewhere—it’s one of those sneaky famous pieces everyone recognizes but can’t name. This thing moves faster than a caffeinated squirrel, with flutes and strings trading blows like it’s some kind of musical MMA match. Every time it comes on, I’m halfway through air-conducting before I even realize it. You can practically see Bach smirking while he wrote this beast. Then there’s “II Air,” aka “that chill-ass tune” from Suite No. 3. Yeah, yeah, we all know it as background music for fancy dinner parties, but listen closely, and it’ll wreck you emotionally. The strings are so smooth they could sell silk sheets, and the pacing? Pure torture—in a good way. It drags you into its little melancholy world and doesn’t let go until you’re sitting there staring at the wall, wondering why life feels so heavy all of a sudden. Don’t play this one if you’re already sad unless you want to cry in your cereal. What really gets me about this album is how tight everything sounds. Marriner and his crew bring an intensity to these centuries-old compositions that make them feel alive again. Sure, it’s technically perfect, but more importantly, it’s got soul—something a lot of modern recordings lack. And props to EMI Classics for keeping the sound crisp without overproducing the hell out of it. So here’s the kicker: Why isn’t stuff like this blasting in clubs instead of whatever auto-tuned nonsense dominates today? Imagine throwing shapes to a gavotte or losing your mind to a bourée. Maybe I’m dreaming, but damn, wouldn’t that be something? Anyway, do yourself a favor and grab this album. Just don’t blame me when you start nerding out about Baroque music at parties.

About J S Bach The Academy Of St MartinintheFields Neville Marriner

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
