Josef K - Entomology

Josef K’s Entomology: A Post-Punk Masterclass That Still Stings Alright, let me tell ya—Josef K’s Entomology isn’t just another reissue you toss on your playlist and forget about. Released in 2006 via Domino (yeah, the same label that gave us Arctic Monkeys), this album feels like a time capsule from the early '80s UK post-punk scene but somehow lands perfectly in the modern ear. It’s got grit, wit, and enough sharp edges to keep you hooked for hours. The genres? Rock, Pop/Rock, New Wave, Indie Rock—you name it. But what makes this record stand out is how it blends punk attitude with moody introspection. Tracks like “Sorry For Laughing” and “Crazy To Exist” are burned into my brain—not because they’re flawless or anything, but because they feel. They hit you where it hurts—or helps, depending on your mood. Take “Sorry For Laughing,” for instance. Man, this one’s haunting. The bassline by David Weddell crawls under your skin while Paul Haig’s vocals hover somewhere between apathy and despair. You can almost picture him staring out of a rain-soaked window, cigarette dangling from his lips, thinking about all the things he didn’t say. And then there’s Malcolm Ross’ guitar work—it doesn’t scream at you; instead, it whispers these jagged little melodies that stick around long after the song ends. There’s something deeply personal here, as if Josef K were letting us peek into their diary without asking permission. Then there’s “Crazy To Exist.” Holy crap, this track hits different. From the opening notes, it grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go. Haig’s lyrics are raw, almost conversational, like he’s sitting across from you spilling his guts over a pint. Ronnie Torrance’s drumming gives it an urgent pulse, making it impossible not to move—even if it’s just tapping your foot nervously. This song reminds me of those late-night drives when you’re alone with your thoughts, questioning everything. It’s messy, unpredictable, and absolutely beautiful. What strikes me most about Entomology is how alive it sounds. These aren’t polished studio creations; they’re snapshots of real moments, captured imperfectly yet authentically. Kim Dumas did a killer job mastering this beast, and props to Victoria Collier for the design—it’s simple, stark, and fits the vibe perfectly. And hey, shoutout to Paul Morley for the liner notes. If you’ve ever wondered why critics rave about Josef K, his words will give you some clarity. Also, fun fact: Alice Cooper gets a writing credit here! Yeah, I know, right? Weird flex, but cool. Listening to Entomology makes me wonder why more people don’t talk about Josef K today. Maybe it’s because they weren’t flashy or trendy—they just made music that mattered. Or maybe it’s because we live in a world obsessed with instant gratification, and albums like this demand patience. Either way, spinning this record feels like finding an old mixtape in the back of a drawer—one you forgot existed but instantly remember loving. So yeah, Entomology might not change your life, but it’ll definitely make you think twice about what good music really is. Now excuse me while I crank up “Sorry For Laughing” again… and try not to cry in public.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Entomology* by Josef K, released in 2006, is like a time capsule of raw post-punk energy mixed with indie rock vibes. What makes it stand out? It features tracks written by both Paul Haig and Malcolm Ross, two key members of the band, but here’s the kicker—Malcolm Ross also played guitar on nearly every song. Oh, and fun fact: the liner notes were penned by none other than Paul Morley, the legendary music journalist. So, not only does this album sound great, but it also has some serious creative brainpower behind it.

If this wasn't on MTV in the US back in the 80s, it should have been.
