Brutal Bill - Project 2

Review by Barry Ratcliffe

Project 2 by Brutal Bill: A House Gem That Still Hits Hard Alright, let’s talk about Project 2—a little slice of 1996 that still feels like stepping into a neon-lit club where the bass never stops. Brutal Bill dropped this album under Henry Street Music, and man, it's got that raw, unfiltered house energy we don’t hear much anymore. The guy wore all the hats here—he produced, mixed, arranged, and basically birthed this whole thing into existence. And shoutout to Rick Essig for mastering because, honestly, these tracks slap hard. Now, I gotta say, there are two tracks on this album that just stick with you. First up is "I’m Jumpin’ (Up & Down)." Like, how do you not move to this? It’s one of those songs that grabs you by the soul and says, “Hey, stop overthinking life and DANCE.” The beat builds so naturally, layering kicks and hi-hats until you’re fully locked in. There’s something primal about it—it doesn’t need flashy synths or gimmicks; it just works. Every time I hear it, I picture myself in some dimly lit NYC basement rave back in the day, feeling alive in ways only house music can make you feel. Then there’s "Get Up Everybody (Progressive Disco Mix)," which might as well be renamed “Your Morning Alarm But Better.” This track has this infectious groove that sneaks up on you. You think it’s chill at first, but then BAM—the rhythm shifts, and suddenly your feet have a mind of their own. The mix between the old-school disco vibes and that late-night NY house edge is fire. It’s the kind of song that makes you wanna grab strangers and yell, “WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!” before spinning them around wildly. Yeah, it’s dramatic, but hey, isn’t that what dance floors are for? What’s wild about Project 2 is how timeless it feels. Even though it came out in ‘96, it doesn’t sound dated. Maybe it’s because Brutal Bill poured everything he had into this project—you can tell he wasn’t trying to chase trends or please anyone else. He made exactly the record he wanted to make, and that authenticity shines through every beat. But here’s the kicker: listening to this album now feels kinda bittersweet. House music used to be this underground heartbeat, this secret language shared between people who got it. Now, it’s everywhere—and don’t get me wrong, that’s awesome—but part of me misses the grittier, more personal vibe albums like Project 2 brought to the table. So yeah, if you haven’t heard this yet, go find it. Turn it up loud. Let Brutal Bill remind you why house music will always matter. Oh, and while you're at it, maybe send a thank-you note to Rick Essig too. Dude crushed the mastering game on this one. And hey—next time you're stuck in traffic, put this on. Trust me, even gridlock starts to feel like a party.

Interesting fact about Album

Here's an interesting fact: Brutal Bill’s *Project 2* album, released in 1996, showcases his versatility as a producer. Not only did he produce and mix the entire album, but he also arranged every track himself. One standout tune, *"Get Up Everybody (Progressive Disco Mix)"*, blends house energy with a retro disco vibe, making it a dance floor favorite. The album was mastered by Rick Essig, adding a professional polish to its sound. It’s wild how one person can wear so many hats—producer, mixer, arranger—and still nail it.
