Album Review: Waylon Jennings – Too Dumb For New York City Too Ugly For LA Alright, so let’s dive into this gem of an album from 1969. Waylon Jennings’ Too Dumb For New York City Too Ugly For LA is one of those records that just feels like a big ol’ middle finger to the music industry norms of its time. It’s got grit, soul, and enough outlaw vibes to make you wanna grab a whiskey and sit by a campfire. With genres spanning Country, Folk Rock, Blues Rock, and Outlaw Country, it’s basically a genre buffet—and trust me, every track has something worth chewing on. Now, I’m not gonna pretend like I’ve listened to every single song fifty times (who’s got that kinda time?), but two tracks really stuck with me: “Too Dumb for New York City” and “Didn’t We Shine.” First up, “Too Dumb for New York City.” Man, this tune hits hard. The title alone is already iconic—it’s like Waylon took all his frustration with trying to fit into big-city life and turned it into pure gold. His vocals are raw and unpolished in the best way possible, like he’s telling you the story over a late-night barstool chat. And can we talk about the lyrics? They’re brutally honest without being preachy. You feel him wrestling with identity and self-worth, which honestly feels timeless. Whether you’re chasing dreams or just trying to figure out where you belong, this song gets under your skin. Plus, the mix of acoustic guitar and steel guitar gives it that classic country-rock edge that makes it impossible not to nod along. Then there’s “Didn’t We Shine.” This one’s more reflective, almost wistful. It’s like Waylon’s looking back at better days—those moments when everything seemed perfect even if they weren’t. There’s this bittersweet vibe running through it, and you can hear how much heart he puts into every word. Brent Rowan’s electric guitar work adds these little sparks of emotion throughout, while the backing vocals give it a warm, full sound. It’s the kind of track that sneaks up on you after a few listens—you think it’s just another slow jam until you realize it’s stuck in your head for days. What really ties the whole album together is the production. Richie Albright did a bang-up job keeping things tight but still loose enough to let Waylon’s personality shine through. Billy Sherrill’s mixing deserves a shoutout too—he didn’t drown anything in unnecessary polish, letting the instruments breathe and giving each note room to land. Oh, and props to Glenn Meadows for mastering because, dang, this thing sounds crisp even today. One thing I gotta say is, listening to this album feels like stepping back in time but also feeling totally connected to the present. Waylon wasn’t afraid to break rules or piss people off, and that rebellious spirit lives on in every track here. Honestly, it’s wild to think this came out in ’69—the dude was ahead of his time. So yeah, if you’re into music that’s real, raw, and packed with attitude, you need to check this out. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand—it’ll punch you in the gut instead, in the best way possible. Weirdly enough, as I was writing this review, I kept thinking about how Waylon would probably laugh at anyone overanalyzing his work. Maybe that’s why it works so well—it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Now go listen to it before someone tells you it’s cool.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that Waylon Jennings' album *Too Dumb For New York City Too Ugly For LA* was a genre-blending masterpiece? Released in 1969, it mixed Country, Rock, and even touches of Blues and Folk. What’s wild is how many talented musicians were involved—like Reggie Young on guitar, who also played with Elvis Presley, and Richie Albright, who not only produced but added percussion and resonator guitar. Fun fact: Waylon himself played mandolin and electric guitar! It’s no wonder this outlaw country gem still resonates today!
