Album Review: Kilo RiotHertzMega HertzGeiger Hertz by The Revolutionaries Alright, let’s talk about Kilo RiotHertzMega HertzGeiger Hertz, the 1977 dub masterpiece from The Revolutionaries. If you’re into reggae and dub—and honestly, who isn’t?—this one’s a hidden gem that deserves your attention. Produced by L. McKenzie under the Crown label in Jamaica, this album is like a warm, analog hug for your ears. It’s raw, it’s vibey, and it’s got that unmistakable groove that only ‘70s Jamaican dub can pull off. Now, I gotta say, the tracklist might look short, but don’t let that fool you. Every song on here has its own flavor, but two tracks really stuck with me: “Kilo Riot” and “Mega Hertz.” Let me break it down. “Kilo Riot” kicks things off with this deep, rolling bassline that just grabs you by the soul. The drums are punchy, and there’s this echo-y guitar skank floating around like smoke in a dimly lit room. It’s hypnotic, man. Like, you could put this on repeat and just zone out for hours. What makes it memorable is how stripped-back it feels—no frills, just pure dub magic. You can almost picture the studio session, everyone jamming late at night, vibes high, maybe a spliff or two burning somewhere in the corner (hey, it was the '70s!). Then there’s “Mega Hertz,” which flips the script a bit. This one’s more playful, with these trippy sound effects panning left and right. It’s like the music’s dancing around your head, teasing you to keep up. There’s this moment halfway through where everything drops out except for the bass and some distant cymbals—it’s so simple yet so effective. Feels like standing on a beach at sunset, watching the waves roll in. Total vibe overload. What’s wild about this album is how timeless it sounds. Even though it came out in ’77, it doesn’t feel dated at all. Maybe it’s because dub is one of those genres that never really goes out of style, or maybe it’s just that The Revolutionaries were ahead of their time. Either way, listening to this feels like stepping into a time machine—but not in a cheesy retro way. More like, “Wow, people were making music this good back then?” Oh, and here’s something random—I couldn’t help but notice how all the track titles have this sci-fi twist to them. Hertz, Mega Hertz, Geiger Hertz… It’s like they’re trying to turn dub into some kind of cosmic experience. Makes me wonder if L. McKenzie was secretly a space nerd or just had a thing for physics puns. Anyway, if you haven’t heard Kilo RiotHertzMega HertzGeiger Hertz yet, do yourself a favor and give it a spin. It’s the kind of album that sneaks up on you, stays in your head, and leaves you craving more. And hey, isn’t that what great music’s supposed to do?

About The Revolutionaries

Jamaican backing band, in-house session band for 's label. Built around drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Ranchie Mc Lean - later replaced by Robbie Shakespeare - the band featured at various times fellow Kingston musicians Earl 'Wire' Lindo, Radcliffe 'Dougie' Bryan, Ansell Collins, Bobby Kalphat, Lloyd Parks, Uziah 'Sticky' Thompson, Bongo Herman, Stanley Bryan, Bo Peep, Eric 'Bingy Bunny' Lamont, Errol 'Tarzan' Nelson, Skully Simms, Robbie Lyn, Mikey 'Mao' Chung to name a few. Everything fell into place when they backed The Mighty Diamonds classic 1976 set 'Right Time'. The album offered fresh new Rockers rhythms to the reggae world. This militant double drumming style dominated the music scene from 1975-1978. It's from this period that a set of classic dubs were created by Bunny 'Striker' Lee from sessions recorded at Channel 1. The Revolutionaries mark the first time that the legendary duo Sly & Robbie played together.
