Album Review: Moyo Heart Soul by Keiko Matsui – Jazz That’ll Make Your Heart Skip a Beat (and Maybe Your Feet Too) Alright, let’s talk about Moyo Heart Soul, the 2007 jazz gem from Keiko Matsui. If you’re into smooth vibes with just enough edge to keep things interesting, this one’s for you. It's like sipping a latte while lounging in some fancy Tokyo café—except suddenly, you're transported to Thailand or Russia or wherever else this album decided to take its chill pill. First off, props to Keiko for wearing both hats as artist and producer. You don’t see that every day unless you count Taylor Swift, but let’s not go there right now. And shoutout to Cristihan Gutterre (yes, spelled exactly like that) for being listed twice as executive producer—double duty means double cool points, right? Now, onto the music. With tracks like “Um Novo Dia (A New Day)” and “When I Close My Eyes,” this album doesn’t just play—it whispers sweet nothings into your ears. Take “Um Novo Dia,” for example. The melody hits you like sunshine breaking through clouds after a week of gloomy weather. It starts soft, almost shy, then builds into something so uplifting it feels like someone handed your soul a warm blanket. Honestly, if this track doesn’t make you feel optimistic about life, maybe check your pulse because you might be part zombie. Then there’s “When I Close My Eyes.” Oh man, this one sticks. Why? Because it’s got layers. Like an onion—but way less tear-inducing. There’s even a Township Version that adds a whole new flavor, kind of like sprinkling chili flakes on your chocolate ice cream. Sounds weird at first, but once you get it, you can’t imagine it any other way. This tune is haunting yet comforting, like remembering an old friend who moved away but still texts you memes sometimes. Other standouts include “Black River,” which has a moody groove perfect for brooding dramatically by a window during a storm, and “Marula,” which sounds like what would happen if trees could sing lullabies. Seriously, these songs are so vivid they practically paint pictures in your brain. So yeah, Moyo Heart Soul is smooth jazz gold with a dash of contemporary flair. Released across Japan, Thailand, and Russia under labels like Victor and Platinum, it’s clear this album was meant to travel. And honestly, isn’t that what great music does? Takes you places without charging baggage fees. Final thought: Listening to this record made me realize two things. One, Keiko Matsui knows how to craft melodies that stick better than gum on a hot sidewalk. Two, if jazz albums were people, this one would definitely be the mysterious stranger at a party who leaves early but somehow becomes the topic of conversation for weeks. Go figure.
