Album Review: Almost Gone by Barry Mann (1979) Alright, let’s talk about Almost Gone, the kinda underrated pop gem from Barry Mann that dropped in 1979. If you’re into vocal-driven tunes with a touch of heartfelt storytelling, this one might just hit the spot. Released via Warner Bros. Records and produced by the legendary Gus Dudgeon (yeah, the guy behind some of Elton John’s biggest hits), this album has a vibe that feels like a warm hug on a chilly day—comforting but still got layers to it. Now, I gotta shout out two tracks here because they stuck with me for different reasons. First up is “For No Reason At All.” Man, this song sneaks up on ya. It starts off simple enough, but then Barry’s voice kicks in, smooth as butter, and you realize there’s more going on than meets the ear. The lyrics? Super relatable. Like, who hasn’t felt frustrated over something that doesn’t make sense? You know those moments when life throws curveballs for no damn reason? Yeah, that’s what this track nails. Plus, the melody lingers long after the song ends—it’s catchy without being annoying, which ain’t easy to pull off. Then there’s the title track, “Almost Gone.” This one’s a mood setter for sure. There’s a bittersweetness to it, like saying goodbye to someone or something you care about but knowing deep down it’s probably for the best. Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann wrote these words together, and you can tell—they’ve got that chemistry thing down pat. The production gives it a soft glow, almost dreamy, while Barry’s vocals add weight to the emotion. Honestly, it’s the kind of song that makes you sit back and think, “Wow, I needed to hear that right now.” The album saw releases across the US, UK, Canada, Italy, and Belgium, so clearly folks were feeling it globally. And props to Moonlight for mixing everything so cleanly—you can really hear all the little details shine through. Here’s the thing though: listening to Almost Gone feels like stepping into another era, but not in a dated way. It’s nostalgic yet fresh enough to remind you how timeless good songwriting can be. Weirdly enough, it also made me wonder why Barry Mann didn’t get more shine as a solo artist—he was always killing it behind the scenes writing for others. Maybe he preferred staying low-key? Who knows. So yeah, if you’re hunting for an album that’s equal parts introspective and uplifting, give Almost Gone a spin. Just don’t blame me if you end up replaying “For No Reason At All” twenty times in a row. Oh, and hey—next time you see Gus Dudgeon’s name in the credits, take note. Dude knew how to craft magic.
