Smoke Fairies - Out Of The Woods Disconnect

Out Of The Woods Disconnect by Smoke Fairies: A Sonic Walk Through the Wild Let me tell you something—I've had this album on repeat for days now, and it’s one of those records that sneaks up on you. You think you’re just listening to some chill folk-rock vibes, but then bam, it hits you right in the feels. "Out Of The Woods Disconnect" is a moody masterpiece from the UK duo Smoke Fairies, released back in 2019 under Year Seven Records. It’s not perfect, but man, does it have soul. The genres here are all over the place—pop, folk, world, country, rock—but somehow they pull it off without sounding like a chaotic mess. Their style leans heavily into alternative rock, with haunting harmonies and raw instrumentation that feel like wandering through an overgrown forest at twilight. Producer Phil Ek (who also engineered and mixed) deserves props for keeping things tight while letting the organic chaos breathe. And can we talk about Davey Brozowski's drumming? Subtle yet punchy, like a heartbeat you didn’t know you needed. Now, let’s zoom in on two tracks because ain’t nobody got time to review every song. First up: “Disconnect.” This track kicks things off with a slow burn. The guitars creep in like shadows stretching across a room, and Jessica Davies’ vocals? Damn near hypnotic. She shares vocal duties with Katherine Blamire, whose guitar work adds layers of texture that make your ears perk up. What sticks with me most is how relatable the lyrics feel—it’s about feeling lost, untethered, floating somewhere between who you were and who you want to be. That opening line still gives me chills: “I don’t recognize myself anymore.” Haven’t we all been there? Then there’s “Out Of The Woods,” which flips the vibe entirely. It starts sparse, almost fragile, but builds into this lush crescendo that feels like breaking free from whatever’s holding you down. There’s something magical about the interplay between Davies’ basslines and Blamire’s guitar riffs—it’s as if they’re having a conversation only they understand. Oh, and shoutout to the mellotron; it adds this eerie, otherworldly quality that lingers long after the song ends. Honestly, I couldn’t get this one out of my head for weeks. Every listen feels like discovering a new detail—a hidden harmony, a subtle shift in rhythm—you know what I mean? One thing worth mentioning is Daren Newman’s illustration for the cover art. It’s simple but striking, kinda like the music itself. It sets the tone perfectly, hinting at the wilderness both literal and metaphorical explored throughout the album. So yeah, “Out Of The Woods Disconnect” isn’t gonna blow your mind with flashy production or chart-topping bangers, but maybe that’s the point. It’s understated, personal, and weirdly comforting. Like a friend sitting next to you saying, “Hey, life’s messy, but we’ll figure it out.” And hey, fun fact: apparently the band wrote all these songs themselves. No ghostwriters, no big studio tricks. Just two women pouring their hearts onto tape. Makes you wonder why more artists don’t take that approach, doesn’t it? Final thought? Listening to this album feels like stepping out of a foggy wood into clear daylight. Except instead of relief, you kinda miss the mystery once it’s gone. Weird, huh?

SF stick to their own original style, great songwriting, no bandwagon jumping, a string of albums full of great songs, far more substance than many of their contemporaries, they really deserve far more attention. DBTWH is another album full of well written material and I reserve a special place for Left To Roll.

Not too "etherial". I think the video is about what happens if you loose your mobile phone. Google Maps would have made all this unnecessary.

Wow, it's so nice to see that Smoke Fairies are still making great music. I feel lucky to have been able to see them perform in coffee shops during my college days in New Orleans. They were super sweet and very talented.
