Album Review: Giselle by Adam, The Philharmonia Orchestra, Robert Irving (1973) If you're into classical music that feels like stepping into a dreamy storybook, then Giselle is worth your time. Released in 1973 under the French label Moment Musical, Pathé Marconi EMI, this album brings together composer Adolphe Adam’s timeless score with The Philharmonia Orchestra and conductor Robert Irving. It's not just an album; it's an experience—like wandering through a misty forest where ballerinas and spectral spirits dance around you. Yeah, it gets that cinematic. One track I can’t stop thinking about is N°4 - Allegro - Valse - Coda. This one hits differently. It starts off bouncy and playful, like champagne bubbles tickling your nose, but then shifts gears into something more dramatic and sharp. You know those moments when you’re reading a book or watching a movie, and suddenly everything flips? That’s what this piece does—it keeps you on edge. Somehow, it feels both light-hearted and intense at the same time, which is probably why it stuck in my head long after the last note faded. Another standout for me is N°17 - Les Willis. If spooky vibes are your thing, this one's a gem. It’s haunting without being over-the-top scary—the kind of music that makes you glance over your shoulder even though you know no one’s there. The strings creep up on you, whispering secrets only they understand, while the orchestra adds layers of tension. Honestly, it gave me goosebumps. Like, legit chills. The rest of the album has its charm too, especially tracks like N°10 - Andante and N°22 - Finale, which balance out the drama with softer, reflective tones. But these two tracks really stood out because they felt alive, almost as if they had their own personalities. What’s wild about Giselle is how it manages to transport you to another world—one filled with romance, tragedy, and ghostly dances. Listening to it feels like peeking behind a curtain into a ballet performance from centuries ago, except you don’t need tickets or fancy clothes. Just hit play, and boom—you’re there. Final thought? Classical music doesn’t always have to feel stiff or unapproachable. Albums like Giselle remind us that it can be fun, emotional, and downright eerie all at once. Oh, and here’s the unexpected part—I listened to this late at night, and now I kinda think my house might be haunted. Coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe Les Willis decided to pay me a visit. Either way, 10/10 would recommend… but maybe turn on a nightlight first.
