The Angels - Glory Of Love

Review by Wes Wyatt

The Angels’ Glory of Love: A Raw Slice of 1956 Blues Magic Man, if you’re looking for something that’ll hit you right in the feels, The Angels’ Glory of Love is it. This little gem from 1956 doesn’t try to be anything fancy—it’s just straight-up soul poured into vinyl. With its mix of Rhythm & Blues and vocal-heavy vibes, this album feels like sitting on a creaky porch while the sun dips low. It’s raw, real, and kinda messy in the best way. Let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck with me. First up, “Glory of Love.” Oh wow, this one hits different. From the first note, you can feel the ache in their voices—like they’ve lived every word they’re singing. You don’t need some big production or flashy tricks when the emotion’s already there. It’s not perfect, but who cares? That’s what makes it so damn good. I swear, every time I hear those harmonies swell, it’s like my chest gets a little tighter. Like, how do they pack so much longing into three minutes? Then there’s “It’s You I Love Best,” which is just... swoon-worthy. This track reminds me why old-school love songs had all the charm—they didn’t overthink it. Just pure, unfiltered devotion dripping outta the speakers. There’s this moment near the end where the lead singer holds onto a note for what feels like forever, and honestly, I could listen to just that part on repeat. It’s simple stuff, sure, but sometimes simplicity cuts deeper than any modern beat drop ever could. You know, listening to this record feels like stepping back in time but also forward somehow. These guys weren’t chasing trends—they were making music because they had to. And isn’t that what art’s supposed to be about? No algorithms, no TikTok challenges—just heart. Funny thing though—I kept thinking, would these songs still work today? Then I realized, nah, they wouldn’t. They belong to another era, where imperfections made things beautiful. Maybe we lost something along the way. Or maybe I’m just getting too sentimental. Either way, give Glory of Love a spin if you want music that talks to your soul instead of your playlist stats.

This song goes back to Benny Goodman in 1936. However, the Five Keys' 1951 version is my favorite from the R&B era.

Yes prob the best version. Nelson Martin is the only living member. He was a professional body builder. He's now 74 yrs old. The prospects of a 2nd recording never materialized, according to researcher, George Frunzi, reported in Echoes of the Past magazine.

@papadoowop I show this released in Oct 56, while the Five Keys dates back to 51. Is this one a reissue? If so, what was the original label?

This IS the original version done over by a lot of groups, The Velvetones sold the most copies of it, but this is the first and best version.
