The Angels - Cry Baby Cry

Cry Baby Cry by The Angels: A Retro Blast That Still Packs a Punch Alright, let’s get real for a sec. Cry Baby Cry by The Angels ain’t your average 1962 pop-rock snoozefest. Nope. This thing hits different—like someone took doo-wop, threw in some rock grit, and sprinkled it with enough vocal drama to make you sit up straight. Released on Caprice and Eric Records (yeah, those were labels back then), this album is raw, unfiltered emotion wrapped up in slick orchestration courtesy of Hutch Davie and his crew. It’s like they knew exactly how to tug at your heartstrings without being too polite about it. Now, I gotta talk tracks because that’s where the magic happens. First off, “Cry Baby Cry.” Holy crap, this one sticks to your brain like gum under a diner table. The vocals are so damn earnest it almost hurts—like these guys aren’t just singing; they’re pleading, begging, maybe even crying themselves. And that hook? Man, it’s got this weird way of making you wanna shout along even though you probably sound terrible doing it. It’s not perfect, but who cares? That’s what makes it unforgettable. Then there’s “That’s All I Ask Of You,” which flips the mood entirely. If “Cry Baby Cry” punches you in the gut, this track whispers sweet nothings into your ear instead. The harmonies here are smooth as hell, and Hutch Davie’s orchestra lays down this lush backdrop that feels like sinking into a velvet couch. But don’t let the softness fool you—it’s still got teeth. There’s an ache in the lyrics that sneaks up on you when you least expect it, kinda like stubbing your toe but in a good way. What really gets me about this album is how unhinged it feels compared to today’s polished garbage. These dudes weren’t worried about algorithms or TikTok trends—they just went for it. No filter, no overthinking, just pure emotion splattered all over the place. Sure, the production might feel dated now, but isn’t that part of its charm? Like finding an old vinyl in your grandma’s attic and realizing she had better taste than half the stuff out now. So yeah, Cry Baby Cry. Two tracks, two knockout punches. Rock, pop, doo-wop—who gives a damn what genre it is? It’s real, it’s raw, and it doesn’t apologize for itself. Honestly, if more music today had this kind of guts, we’d all be better off. Or maybe we’d just cry more. Either way, count me in. Oh, and one last thing—why don’t they make album covers like this anymore? Just saying.

I was privileged to hear these wonderful ladies in concert, very close, about the first five rows on the floor in front of the stage. Peggy Santiiglia sang lead, if I am correct. Absolutely wonderful experience. The 1960's were a great time to grow up, even with all the turmoil of the decade. Great memories!

This song has one of the best ending ever. Whoever arranged it with that orchestra was a genius. Should have done so much better on the charts.

Reminds me of my teenage years and the heartbreak that came with them because of a breakup with that special someone. Absolutely love the words of this song; they give comfort to a heartache.

I've been trying to find this song for a good while now. Soo glad I did ?. My neighbor introduced me to this when I was just a little girl. She was an elderly and my best friend. Now I can play this at her grave ?

This one has teenage Linda Jansen on lead along with ‘TIL, which gives me chills every time I hear it. Linda is gone now but we’ll always have the songs that She gave us. Her memory will live on.
