The Bastard Suns - Long Live Song

Long Live Song by The Bastard Suns: A Chaotic, Heartfelt Love Letter to Rock, Ska, and Punk Fans Everywhere If you’ve ever cranked up the volume on a record so hard it felt like your speakers might explode but didn’t care because the music was just that good, then "Long Live Song" by The Bastard Suns is gonna hit you right in the feels. Released back in 2013 under Something Done Right Records, this album isn’t just an LP—it’s a wild ride through raw emotion, punchy ska rhythms, and punk rock grit that somehow still manages to feel polished without losing its edge. Let’s talk tracks for a sec. There are standouts here, no doubt about it. First up? “Right Place / Wrong Time.” Man, this one sticks with you. It’s got that perfect mix of pissed-off energy and soul-searching lyrics that makes you wanna scream along while also kinda staring off into space thinking about life choices. Clay Hiers’ vocals rip through the mix like he's pouring his guts out, and when the horns kick in (yeah, there are horns—ska vibes all over this thing), it’s impossible not to move. This track reminds me of those moments where everything feels wrong but also kind of right at the same time. You know what I mean? Like breaking down only to realize you needed the breakdown to grow stronger. Heavy stuff, man. Then there’s “Pain Train (Down to Hurtsboro).” Holy cow, does this song slap. From the first note, it grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. Between Wes Driscoll’s guitar riffs slicing through the air and Jay Tea Thomas laying down some serious drumwork, this tune feels like being strapped to the front of a runaway train—and loving every second of it. The whole band comes together here like they’re possessed, and honestly? That’s probably why it shows up twice on the tracklist. Once wasn’t enough. I swear, listening to this feels like getting punched in the gut—but in the best way possible. It’s cathartic, chaotic, and leaves you breathless. The Bastard Suns pull off something special with this album—they blend genres like ska and punk seamlessly, but never lose sight of their rock roots. And props to Mongo Peterson holding it down on bass AND backing vocals; dude’s clearly working overtime. Plus, can we take a moment to appreciate Eric Cohen-Greenberg tickling those keys on piano and organ? He adds layers that make these songs feel bigger than they already are. What really gets me, though, is how personal this album feels. These aren’t just songs—they’re stories, confessions, maybe even therapy sessions set to music. Clay Hiers wrote most of these tracks, and you can tell he bled into every word. When Whitney Carite joins in on lead vocals, her voice adds another layer of depth, almost like she’s whispering secrets directly into your ear. By the time you get to the title track, “Long Live Song,” you’re left with this weird mix of exhaustion and exhilaration. It’s like the band took everything they had inside them and poured it into these recordings. And honestly? I’m glad they did. Listening to this album feels like finding a hidden treasure chest full of memories you didn’t know you had. So yeah, if you’re looking for something shiny and perfect, this ain’t it. But if you want real, messy, beautiful music that hits you square in the chest and stays lodged there long after the last note fades… well, you know what to do. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself hitting repeat until your neighbors start complaining. Oh, and hey—one more thing. After listening to this album, I couldn’t help but wonder: What exactly is Hurtsboro? Because whatever it is, I think I need to visit.
