Beethoven’s Favourite Piano Sonatas by Vladimir Ashkenazy – A Timeless Treat for Classical Fans If you’re into classical music, chances are you’ve stumbled upon Beethoven’s piano sonatas at some point. They’re like the ultimate playlist of emotions—dramatic, soulful, and sometimes just plain wild. And when it comes to performances, Vladimir Ashkenazy’s 1997 album Favourite Piano Sonatas is one that deserves a spot on your shelf (or your Spotify library). Released under London Records and Decca in the US and Europe, this collection brings together some of Beethoven’s most iconic works with Ashkenazy’s masterful touch. Let’s dive into two tracks that really stuck with me: the "Moonlight Sonata" and the "Appassionata." Spoiler alert—they’re both total earworms but in completely different ways. First up, the Moonlight Sonata. You know the one—it starts off all dreamy and moody, like staring out a rainy window while sipping coffee. The second movement, Adagio, feels like a warm hug after the first movement’s chill vibes. But then BAM! The third movement (Vivacissimamente) hits you like a caffeine rush. It’s fast, furious, and honestly? I wasn’t ready for it. Ashkenazy nails the transitions here—he doesn’t just play the notes; he makes them breathe. Listening to this track feels like being inside Beethoven’s head during one of his mood swings. Chaotic? Maybe. Beautiful? Absolutely. Then there’s the Appassionata. Oh man, where do I even start? This one kicks off with those deep, brooding chords in the Grave - Allegro Di Molto E Con Brio section, setting the stage for what feels like an emotional rollercoaster ride. By the time you hit the final movement (Allegro Ma Non Troppo), you’re gripping your seat, wondering how much more intensity your ears can handle. Ashkenazy plays this piece with such fire—it’s not just music; it’s storytelling. Every note feels intentional, every pause loaded with meaning. Honestly, if Beethoven were alive today, I think he’d give Ashkenazy a nod of approval. Or maybe challenge him to a piano duel. Who knows? What makes this album stand out isn’t just the selection of sonatas—it’s how Ashkenazy interprets them. He doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel or anything fancy like that. Instead, he lets Beethoven’s genius shine through while adding his own subtle flair. It’s like listening to an old friend tell a familiar story but with fresh details you hadn’t noticed before. One thing I’ll say about this record—it’s not background music. These pieces demand your attention. Whether it’s the haunting beauty of the Pathétique or the pastoral charm of the Pastoral Sonata, each track pulls you in and keeps you hooked. Even the quieter moments feel electric, like something big is about to happen. So yeah, Favourite Piano Sonatas is basically a love letter to Beethoven, delivered by Ashkenazy with style and heart. If you’re looking to explore classical music or just want to rediscover these classics, this album is a no-brainer. Plus, it’s kinda cool knowing you’re hearing interpretations from 1997—a little slice of late-20th-century artistry meeting early-19th-century brilliance. Final thought? Listening to this album made me realize something weird: Beethoven would’ve been amazing at Twitter. His music packs so much drama and emotion into short bursts—it’s practically built for modern attention spans. Now THAT’S unexpected.

German composer and pianist, born in 1770 (baptized 17 December 1770) in Bonn, Germany and died 26 March 1827 in Vienna, Austria. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in classical music. Beethoven led Viennese Classicism to its highest development and paved the way for Romantic music. Beethoven was the eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop's Kapellmeister. He moved in 1792 to Vienna, where he had some lessons from Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard-player and original composer. By 1815 increasing deafness made public performance impossible and accentuated existing eccentricities of character, patiently tolerated by a series of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph. Beethoven did much to enlarge the possibilities of music and widen the horizons of later generations of composers. To his contemporaries he was sometimes a controversial figure, making heavy demands on listeners both by the length and by the complexity of his writing, as he explored new fields of music.
