John Addison - Alfred Hitchcocks ʽTorn Curtainʼ The Original Sound Track Album

Review by Grigoriy Klimovskikh

Alfred Hitchcock’s Torn Curtain Soundtrack: John Addison’s Underrated Masterpiece Alright, let’s cut to the chase. This ain’t your typical Hollywood cheese-fest soundtrack. John Addison’s score for Alfred Hitchcock’s Torn Curtain is a moody, brooding beast that sneaks up on you like a shadow in an alleyway. Yeah, it’s Stage & Screen music, but don’t let that fool ya—it's gritty, emotional, and packed with tension. Released under Varèse Sarabande (you know, those guys who always save forgotten gems), this album deserves way more love than it gets. Now, I’m not gonna sit here and pretend every track slaps equally—because they don’t. But two tracks stand out so hard they practically demand your attention: “The Murder of Gromeck” and “Escape On The π Bus.” Let me break it down real quick. First off, “The Murder of Gromeck.” Holy crap, this one hits different. It’s dark, jarring, and feels like someone just sucker-punched you in the gut. You can almost picture the scene: slow-motion struggle, hands clawing at air, breaths catching. Addison doesn’t mess around—he builds this suffocating atmosphere with strings that stab and brass that growls. When you hear it, you feel it. No flowery metaphors needed. It sticks with you because it’s raw as hell, like a wound that won’t heal. Then there’s “Escape On The π Bus,” which flips the vibe entirely. This track screams urgency without being over-the-top dramatic. It’s got this driving rhythm that makes your pulse race, like you’re running from something—or maybe toward something. The orchestration? Tight as a drum. Strings slice through the chaos while horns blare like alarms going off in your head. By the time it ends, you're left gasping for air, wondering what the hell just happened. Look, I could ramble about the other tracks too—“The Love Theme From Torn Curtain” tugs at your heartstrings like a sad puppy dog—but these two are the knockout punches. They remind you why soundtracks matter. Music isn’t just background noise; it’s the soul of the story. And Addison? Dude poured his guts into this. Here’s the kicker though: listening to this album feels kinda like watching Hitchcock himself—cold, calculated, yet oddly human. Like, yeah, he’s messing with your brain, but deep down, he knows exactly how you tick. Same goes for Addison’s work here. He didn’t just write music; he wrote feelings. So next time you think about classic film scores, give this one a spin. Just don’t expect sunshine and rainbows—it’s heavy stuff. Oh, and hey, if anyone tells you soundtracks are just elevator music… shove this album in their face. Trust me, they’ll shut up real fast.

If Bernard Herrmann's score was far superior, then why did Hitchcock fire him? I heard his main theme...and it stunk!

Bernard Hermann's score was far superior. This is like the theme for some conventional TV show. More Get Smart than a major movie. Not one thrilling note.

A thrilling yet fun theme that convey's the film's suspense and humor without taking things too seriously. One of Hitchcock's best scores (sorry, Mr. Herrmann -- yours was too dark). John Addison's music provided the light touch the "Torn Curtain" needed.
