Review by Tawnya Sutherland

Album Review: Ian Foster – A Retro Gem That Still Grooves Ian Foster’s self-titled album, released in 1969 on MCA Records, is a vibrant mashup of Pop/Rock, Funk/Soul, and Electronic vibes with dashes of Synth-pop, Boogie, and Disco thrown into the mix. It’s one of those records that doesn’t just sit in one genre—it dances across them all like it owns the dance floor. Produced by Nick Martinelli and remixed by Timmy Regisford (who worked his magic on tracks 1 to 6 and 9), this project feels both timeless and ahead of its time. The album jumps out at you with lush arrangements, tight horns courtesy of The Sam Peake Horns, and groovy basslines laid down by Doug Grigsby. And let’s not forget Ian Foster himself—his lead vocals are smooth yet soulful, carrying an authenticity that makes you feel like he’s singing directly to you. Tracks like “We’ve Lost This Feeling” and “Heaven (Sent Your Love To Me)” stick with you long after the needle lifts off the record. Let’s talk about “We’ve Lost This Feeling.” Right from the opening notes, the song grabs your attention with its moody synth work and punchy percussion. There’s something haunting about how Ian delivers the lyrics—it’s raw but polished enough to keep you hooked. The track builds into a crescendo, layering backing vocals from talents like Cuca and Damon Harris, creating a wall of sound that feels cinematic. It’s one of those songs where you can almost picture yourself walking through a neon-lit cityscape in slow motion. Then there’s “Heaven (Sent Your Love To Me).” If “We’ve Lost This Feeling” is brooding introspection, this track is pure euphoria. With shimmering synths and a funky bassline driving the rhythm, it’s impossible not to move to this one. The horn section adds a celebratory flair, making it feel like a party frozen in time. When Patrice Hawthorne comes in for her feature ("Introducing Patrice Hawthorne"—love that touch), she brings a fresh energy that elevates the whole vibe. By the end, you’re left wondering why this isn’t blasting in every retro playlist known to humankind. What strikes me most about this album is its balance between experimentation and accessibility. Sure, some tracks lean heavily into their era’s production quirks, but they never lose sight of what makes music memorable—emotion and groove. Listening to it today, I’m reminded of how innovative artists were back then, pushing boundaries without overthinking it too much. But here’s the kicker: even though this album dropped over five decades ago, it still sounds fresh. Maybe it’s because we’re living in a world obsessed with reviving ‘70s aesthetics, or maybe it’s because great music truly transcends time. Either way, Ian Foster deserves more recognition than it gets. So grab your vinyl player, dust off your dad’s old stereo, or just stream it if you must—but don’t sleep on this gem. Final thought? If disco balls could talk, they’d probably beg you to play this album again.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s an interesting fact: Ian Foster's self-titled album, released in 1969, was a genre-blending masterpiece that spanned Pop/Rock, Funk/Soul, and Electronic music. It featured styles like Synth-pop, Disco, and Boogie—a bold mix for its time. What’s even cooler? The track "Heaven (Sent Your Love To Me)" became a standout hit, remixed by Timmy Regisford, who gave it a fresh spin decades later. Not many albums from the '60s can say they nailed so many styles while still feeling cohesive. This record had talent all over it—like Grammy-worthy credits for production, vocals, and arrangements. Definitely ahead of its time!

I hear similarities with him and Sherrick too, both great voices. This is real R&B/Soul music…The “R&b” they play on the radio nowadays is watered down and don’t make much sense - And I was born in 1987 but I know what real music is. ?
