Review by Cynthia Gratzer

Nini La Chance by Annie Cordy: A Retro French Gem That’ll Make You Go “Ooh La La!” Let’s cut to the chase—Nini La Chance is one of those albums that feels like a time machine back to 1976 France, complete with berets, baguettes, and maybe even a mime or two (okay, maybe not the mime). Released under CBS Records, this quirky blend of Stage & Screen, Pop, Chanson, and Musical vibes has all the charm of a Parisian café on a sunny afternoon. And who better to guide us through this melodic journey than Annie Cordy herself? With her powerhouse vocals and infectious energy, she makes sure you don’t just listen—you feel. Now let me break it down for ya. The album was orchestrated and arranged by Paul Piot, which sounds fancy enough to make you picture him in a velvet suit sipping red wine while scribbling notes furiously. Jacques Mareuil penned some clever-as-hell lyrics, Georges Liferman composed tunes that stick to your brain like caramel sauce, and Pierre Carrel produced the whole shebang while also handling art direction. Honestly, if teamwork made dream work, these folks were living the dream. Standout Tracks That’ll Stick With You First up, we’ve got “Dingue De La Danse”, because who doesn’t love a song about being absolutely nuts for dancing? This track is pure joy wrapped in a disco bow. It’s upbeat, bouncy, and practically begs you to get off your couch and bust out moves you didn’t know you had. I mean, seriously, try listening without tapping your feet—it’s impossible. Annie’s voice here is so full of sass and sparkle that it’s hard not to imagine her shimmying across a glittery stage in sequins. If this song doesn’t put a smile on your face, check your pulse. Then there’s “Pourquoi Tu Me Bats Léon?”, which translates roughly to “Why Do You Hit Me, Leon?” Uh…awkward title aside, this tune is an absolute earworm. The playful delivery masks what could be a very dark topic, but instead, it comes off as cheeky and theatrical. It’s catchy as heck, too. Like, you’ll find yourself humming it at random moments—while brushing your teeth, waiting in line at the grocery store, during awkward silences at family dinners. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Why This Album Still Matters (Kinda) What strikes me most about Nini La Chance is how unapologetically French it is. There’s no attempt to cater to global trends; it’s dripping with local flavor, from the chanson-style storytelling to the musical nods to classic French cinema. Even the artwork by Jan Mara screams vintage chic—a perfect match for the vibe inside. Sure, some tracks feel repetitive (looking at you, multiple versions of the same songs), but hey, repetition can be comforting. Plus, when you’re dealing with such delightful melodies and witty lyrics, hearing them twice isn’t exactly torture. Final Thoughts: Quirky But Loveable If I’m being honest, Nini La Chance won’t change your life. But it might brighten your day—or at least give you something fun to hum along to. Listening to it felt like flipping through an old photo album: nostalgic, slightly kitschy, but oddly endearing. So grab a croissant, pour yourself a glass of rosé, and hit play. Just don’t blame me if you start randomly waltzing around your living room. Oh, and one last thing—why does Leon hit people? Asking for a friend. Rating: 7.5/10 Because sometimes imperfection is part of the charm.
