Harry James And His Orchestra – 1937 1939: A Big Band Blast from the Past Let’s cut to the chase—this album slaps. Released in ‘96 (yeah, I know, it’s kinda weird they waited so long), 1937 1939 by Harry James And His Orchestra is a masterclass in Big Band and Swing that’ll make your feet move whether you like it or not. This French release under Classics isn’t just some dusty relic; it’s alive, man. Alive. The tracklist reads like a who’s who of jazzy bangers, but two cuts stuck with me harder than an overcooked lasagna. First up, “One O’Clock Jump.” Holy smokes, this tune hits different. It’s got that infectious horn riff that feels like someone lit a fire under the bandstand. You can practically hear the sweat dripping off those brass instruments as they swing their hearts out. By the time the sax solo kicks in, forget about sitting still—it ain’t gonna happen. This jam reminds me why people used to dress fancy just to listen to music. They knew what was up. Then there’s “Little White Lies,” which sneaks up on ya like a cat burglar at midnight. The rhythm section lays down such a smooth groove that even your grandma might bust a move. But it’s Harry’s trumpet work that steals the show here—he doesn’t just play notes; he tells stories. Like, you can almost picture him leaning into the mic, blowing his soul straight into your ears. It’s raw, unfiltered emotion wrapped in shiny Swing packaging. If this song doesn’t give you goosebumps, check your pulse—you might be dead. Now, let’s talk real for a sec. Listening to this record feels like stepping back in time, but not in some cheesy retro way. No, this is legit good music that could hold its own against anything today. Sure, we’ve got all these fancy electronic beats now, but nothing screams alive quite like a room full of musicians killing it together. And yeah, maybe the recording quality shows its age, but honestly? That grit adds character. Makes it feel real. So yeah, do yourself a favor and cop this album if you haven’t already. Whether you’re a diehard Jazz fan or just looking for something fresh yet familiar, 1937 1939 delivers. Just don’t blame me when your neighbors start complaining about all the dancing going down in your living room. Oh, and one last thing—why the heck did they wait till ‘96 to put this out? Someone clearly dropped the ball back in the day. But hey, better late than never, right?

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *1937 1939* by Harry James And His Orchestra wasn’t released until 1996, even though the tracks were recorded decades earlier. It’s a collection of Big Band and Swing classics that capture the energetic vibe of that era. One standout track, *"One O’Clock Jump,"* was a huge hit back in the day. Fun to think people in France got to rediscover these jazz gems over 50 years later!

I love this version! Harry James uses almost half of the Basie Band of the time to make this great recording. Herschel Evans was on of my favorite Tenor Saxists in the late 1930s.

You're listening to The Maestro at work here, folks. There will never again be anyone could do what Harry James did and was able to leave to a grateful audience.
