The Kovenant - Nexus Polaris

Nexus Polaris by The Kovenant: A Cosmic Metal Joyride That’s Hard to Forget Alright, buckle up, space cadets and headbangers alike—let’s talk about Nexus Polaris, the 1998 brainchild of Norway’s own The Kovenant. This album is like a black-metal asteroid colliding with a symphonic supernova, leaving behind a trail of goth glitter and heavy riffs. If you’re into genres like Space Rock, Goth Metal, or Scandinavian Metal (and honestly, who isn’t?), this record feels like it was made just for you. First off, let’s give props to the lineup. You’ve got Hellhammer on drums—a guy whose name alone makes me want to buy him a coffee—and Sarah Jezebel Deva lending her ethereal vocals. Then there’s Nagash pulling double duty on bass and growls, because apparently one job wasn’t enough for him. And can we take a moment to appreciate Andreas Marschall’s cover art? It’s like someone took all your sci-fi nightmares, mixed them with neon paint, and slapped them onto an album sleeve. Pure genius. Now, onto the tracks. I’ll spare you the full track-by-track breakdown because ain’t nobody got time for that. Instead, let’s zoom in on two songs that stuck to my brain like gum under a concert seat. “New World Order (Clubmix)” This track is basically what happens when metal kids crash a rave. It’s chaotic, dark, and oddly danceable. Imagine stomping through a dystopian nightclub where everyone’s wearing leather and eyeliner while lasers zap across the room. That’s this song. What sticks out most is how seamlessly it blends industrial beats with Nagash’s guttural roars. You don’t know whether to mosh or bust out some awkward dad dancing. Either way, it works. “Chariots of Thunder” If “New World Order” is the party starter, then “Chariots of Thunder” is the epic movie trailer playing in your mind as you leave said party. This one leans harder into the symphonic side of things, with sweeping synths courtesy of Sverd that make you feel like you’re riding a dragon-powered spaceship through a cosmic storm. Seriously, the production here is so lush it almost distracts from the fact that Astennu’s guitar work could probably melt steel beams. Almost. What really ties everything together is Siggi Bemm’s mastering touch—he polishes these tracks until they gleam like freshly sharpened swords. Oh, and shoutout to Per Heimly Prod. for snapping those otherworldly photos that match the vibe perfectly. So yeah, Nexus Polaris isn’t perfect—it’s a little messy, a lot ambitious, and occasionally sounds like someone threw every idea they had into a blender set to “ludicrous.” But damn if it doesn’t feel alive. Listening to it feels like stepping into a parallel universe where Iron Maiden jams with Depeche Mode aboard a starship piloted by ghosts. Final thought: If aliens ever invade Earth, I’m blasting this album at them. Not sure if it’ll scare them off or impress them enough to spare us, but hey, at least we’ll go out swinging.

An experimental metal band from Hamar/Oslo, Norway, founded in 1992 by Stian Arnesen (aka Lex Icon/Nagash), who was then joined by Amund Svensson (aka Psy Coma/ Blackheart/Thanatos). Covenant was initially founded as an atmospheric/symphonic/melodic/black metal hybrid, but made a drastic stylistic turn towards more modern industrial/electronic influenced metal on their third album Animatronic. Since 1999 the band has been known as The Kovenant as they were forced to change name after a copyright dispute. Since 2003 they have been working on their fifth album Aria Galactica, which remains uncompleted. Current line-up: Lex Icon (Stian Arnesen) - Vocals, bass, keyboards, programming (1992) Psy Coma (Amund Svensson) - Guitar, bass, keyboards, programming (1993) Former members: Von Blomberg (Jan Axel Blomberg) - Drums (19962003, 2010) Sverd (Steinar Johnsen) - Keyboards (19971998, 2010) Astennu (Jamie Stinson) - Lead guitar (19971999) Session/live musicians: Shnaga - Drums (1993) Kharon - Bass (1994) Kine Hult - Keyboards (1998) Sarah Jezebel Deva - Soprano vocals (1998, 2000, 2010) Angel (Audun Stengel) - Guitar (2000 ) Küth (Kent Frydenlund) - Drums (20032009) Brat (Geir Bratland) - Keyboards (20032009)

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that *Nexus Polaris*, the 1998 album by The Kovenant, is a wild mix of metal and space vibes? It’s like a cosmic journey with genres ranging from goth metal to symphonic rock. The album even features Hellhammer on drums, a legendary name in the metal scene. And get this—Sarah Jezebel Deva, known for her haunting vocals, adds an ethereal touch to tracks like "The Sulphur Feast." Oh, and it’s got not one, not two, but three versions of “New World Order,” each remixed for different moods. Spacey, heavy, and dark, this album truly feels like a trip through the stars—and it’s all tied together with Andreas Marschall’s striking cover art.

Having started their career when the Black Metal mania in Norway was starting to wither, The Kovenant could have hardly changed the cards in table with their second album Nexus Polaris, released in 1998. Once again, the album is definitely not assimilable with the said genre, despite Nagash 's vocal performance: the guitar style is fairly simplistic and palm-muted Thrash/Power (fairly reminiscent of Dimmu Borgir and Dark Fortress), the recording is crystal clear and less echoed, the rhythms are galloping 6/8 and the progressions are fairly pop-ish and Iron Maiden-derived, with the occasional contrapuntal keyboard section to make one scream "Symphonic!". To be really fair, this is hardly something to scream before, because this relying over apparent fluidity and "spellbinding" musicianship was actually designed purposefully to hide the band's inability to write consistent hooks and catchy songs: instead, Nexus Polaris' pseudo-psychedelic theatrics are almost deplorable, and are useful only to remind the listener how much was this band pumped up unreasonably, and reaped commercial success only by their contract with the then "rising star" Nuclear Blast label. Highlights: "Bizarre Cosmic Industries", "Chariots of Thunder".

Le 2 premiers albums de the kovenant sont des chefs d ouevres et ils méritent plus de reconnaissance notamment pour le solo de guitare de mannequin qui sans un être un solo de virtuose(bien que technique par moment) est magnifique c est mon grouoe préférée
How lucky for the people to see them live, wish I was there.
