The Nat King Cole Trio - Vocal Classics

Vocal Classics by The Nat King Cole Trio: A Timeless Jazz Journey from Japan Alright, let’s dive into this gem of an album. Vocal Classics by The Nat King Cole Trio—yeah, you heard that right—is one of those records that just sneaks up on you. It’s jazz, but not the kind that feels like it’s trying too hard to impress. This thing was released under Capitol Records in Japan, which already gives it this cool international vibe. Like, how often do you think about Japanese pressings of American jazz? Not enough, probably. Now, I gotta say, this album has some tracks that stick with you long after the needle lifts off the record (or, you know, after you hit pause on your streaming app). Let me tell ya about two songs that really got me. First up: "Embraceable You." Oh man, this one hits different. Nat King Cole’s voice is so smooth it’s almost criminal. He doesn’t just sing—he makes you feel like he’s whispering secrets straight to your soul. And the way the piano dances around his vocals? It’s like they’re having this quiet little conversation only you get to eavesdrop on. There’s something comforting yet heartbreaking about it, like remembering a love that slipped through your fingers. Every time I hear it, I’m transported back to late-night drives where everything felt possible and impossible all at once. Then there’s "Makin’ Whoopee." Okay, don’t let the playful title fool you; this track swings hard. It’s got this cheeky energy, like Nat and the trio are poking fun at romance while still taking it seriously. The rhythm section locks in perfectly, making it impossible not to tap your foot or bob your head. Honestly, I found myself humming this for days after my first listen. It’s lighthearted without being shallow, clever without showing off. Plus, who doesn’t need a reminder now and then that relationships can be messy—but also kinda fun? The rest of the album keeps the magic going. Tracks like "Sweet Lorraine" and "It’s Only A Paper Moon" showcase why Nat King Cole remains a legend. His phrasing, the warmth in his tone—it’s like listening to someone pour their heart out over coffee. No frills, no gimmicks, just pure emotion. But here’s the thing: As much as this album feels timeless, it also made me wonder—why isn’t more jazz celebrated like this today? In our hyper-digital world, we scroll past moments instead of sitting with them. Listening to Vocal Classics feels like slowing down, savoring every note, every word. It’s a reminder that sometimes, perfection lies in simplicity. And hey, here’s a random thought to leave you with: If aliens ever landed and asked us what human music sounds like, I’d hand them this album. Not because it’s flashy or groundbreaking, but because it’s real. Flaws and all, it captures something raw and beautiful about us. So yeah, give Vocal Classics a spin. Let it remind you of the power of a well-told story—and maybe even make you smile along the way.

In 1937, Nat King Cole arrived in Los Angeles where he formed the original lineup of the Nat King Cole Trio. The trio consisted of Nat on piano, Oscar Moore on guitar, and Wesley Prince on double bass - the absence of a drummer making the combo unique among the swing/jazz outifts of that time. The trio played in Los Angeles throughout the late 1930s and recorded many radio transcriptions. In 1939, the Cole Trio was receiving enough attention to embark on its first tour of the East Coast and the Midwest - in New York, Cole, Moore and Prince backed singer on one of her Manhattan gigs. In 1940, the Cole Trio made its first commercially available recording of Sweet Lorraine, which featured Cole on lead vocals and became the group's first hit as well as the group's theme on radio. The outbreak of World War II lead to several line-up changes: Prince, who was drafted into the U.S. military, being temporarily replaced by Red Callender, and later by Johnny Miller who stayed with the group until 1948 (when he was replaced by Joe Comfort). The original guitarist, Oscar Moore, left in 1947 and was replaced by Irving Ashby. During its 1943-1949 period, the Cole Trio had its share of major hits, which were not only commercially successful, but also extremely influential. By the end of the '40s, Nat King Cole (in accordance with ' marketing strategy) gradually phased out his part as improvising jazz singer/pianist with the King Cole Trio, focussing on his new career as jazz-influenced pop singer that he pursued through the '50s and early '60s. The trio officially ceased to exist in September 1951, 14 years after its founding. Original line-up (1937-1942): Nat King Cole: piano Oscar Moore: guitar Wesley Prince: bass Second line-up (1942): Nat King Cole: piano Oscar Moore: guitar Red Callender: bass "Capitol-years" line-up (1943-1947): Nat King Cole: piano Oscar Moore: guitar Johnny Miller: bass Forth line-up (1947-1948): Nat King Cole: piano Irving Ashby: guitar Johnny Miller: bass Fifth line-up (1948-1949): Nat King Cole: piano Irving Ashby: guitar Joe Comfort: bass Final line-up (1949-1951): Nat King Cole: piano Irving Ashby: guitar Joe Comfort: bass Jack Costanzo: bongos

Nat was the best. I listed to him from the time I was 10, starting with his trio and "Nature Boy". It was a sad day when he passed.

Performer: Nat King Cole trio
I personally favour the sessions with the Nat King Cole trio ,it has that intimate atmosphere, instead of his later orchestral performances.

素敵?✨
娘さんのナタリー・コールのCDを借りてカセットテープにチョイスしていましたが、最近処分し、
またカセットテープが流行りと知って後悔しています?✨?
