Zebra - Bears One More Chance

Review by Zachary Jennings

Alright, let’s dive into Bears One More Chance by Zebra. Released back in ’84, this hard rock gem from the US still packs a punch. Atlantic Recording Corporation put it out, and you can tell they didn’t skimp on production—Jack Douglas (yeah, THE Jack Douglas) was behind the boards. R. Jackson penned the tunes, and honestly, the dude knew what he was doing. Now, full disclosure: I’m not gonna pretend to be some music critic with a fancy vocabulary. I just wanna talk about how this album hits. The title tracks—“Bears” and “One More Chance”—are the ones that stick with me. “Bears” is like a gut punch of energy. It’s got this raw, driving riff that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. You can hear the New Orleans roots of Zebra sneaking in there too, which gives it this cool, swampy vibe. Like, you’re not just listening to another 80s rock song—you’re getting something with grit. And man, the vocals? They soar. It’s one of those tracks where you’re like, “Wait, why isn’t this band bigger?” Then there’s “One More Chance,” which takes things down a notch but still slams. It’s more melodic, kinda introspective, but don’t mistake that for soft. The guitar work here is sharp as hell, and the lyrics hit different. It’s the kind of song that makes you nod along while also zoning out, thinking about your own “one more chance” moments. You know what I mean? What gets me about this album is how it balances power and emotion. It’s not trying too hard to be flashy or over-the-top, which is refreshing for a hard rock record from the 80s. Feels real, ya know? Like, these guys weren’t chasing trends—they were just making music they believed in. Here’s the kicker though—why don’t more people talk about Zebra? Seriously. This album could’ve been huge. Maybe it got lost in the shuffle of all the big-name acts at the time. Or maybe it’s better that way—like, it’s a hidden treasure for folks who stumble across it. Either way, Bears One More Chance deserves a spot in your playlist if you’re into stuff that’s got heart and muscle. Oh, and random thought: If bears could rock out, they’d totally jam to this album. Just saying.

Over and over I listened to this one as the Sony Walkman headphones unsuccessfully served as my earmuffs on winter walks to high school.

A great band, very talented. Too bad they only had four studio albums over 35 years in the tank. All good stuff though.

Lyrics:
In the middle of winter
The trees are bare and the bears are hibernating
The only sound in the forest
Is the sound of snow heard crashing to the ground
And in the middle of loving
I hope you'll find a place in your heart for them
They really can't do us any harm
It is only us who can do harm to them

But there's an animal that winter won't affect at all
He sits by fireplaces waiting for the winter's fall
He owns guns and oh you know he's got that gun in his hand
He's a man and oh, he's got that precious thing in his hand

So in the middle of loving
I hope you'll find a place in your heart for them
When it's cold and the grass is gold
All the animals take shelter as they hide
And when an animal can't find shelter
Some time winter takes over and he dies

But there's an animal that winter won't affect at all
He sits by fireplaces waiting for the winter's fall
He owns guns and oh, you know he's got that gun in his hand
He's a man and oh he hold's that precious life in his hand
