Side Effects by Reflected Illusions: A Sonic Trip Worth Taking If you’re into music that feels like it’s been beamed in from another dimension, Side Effects by Reflected Illusions might just be your next obsession. Released back in 2008 out of Canada, this album blends genres like Electronic, Pop/Rock, and throws in some Krautrock, Minimal, Experimental, and Ambient vibes for good measure. It’s not perfect, but man, does it make an impression. The tracklist includes tunes like “Sweep The Light,” “Alkaloids,” “Side Effects,” “Intro,” “Endless Night,” “Lysergic Daydreaming,” and—funny enough—“Sweep the Light” again (yes, they really named two tracks almost the same). But hey, repetition can work if done right, right? Let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck with me. First up is “Alkaloids.” This one’s wild. It starts off kinda subdued, all moody synths and creeping beats, but then BAM—it kicks into this hypnotic groove that makes you feel like you’ve wandered into a sci-fi movie soundtrack. I couldn’t stop nodding my head to it. There’s something addictive about how the layers build up slowly, like watching clouds shift into strange shapes. You don’t know where it’s going, but you trust it anyway. Then there’s “Lysergic Daydreaming,” which is exactly what it sounds like—a dreamy, trippy ride. Imagine lying on a grassy field at night, staring at stars while someone plays ambient electronica nearby. That’s this song. Its shimmering tones and glitchy textures are weirdly soothing, like a lullaby for people who overthink everything. Honestly, I kept coming back to it because it felt like a warm hug for my brain. One thing I love about Side Effects is how unpolished it feels. In a world full of overly slick production, this album has personality. Sure, it’s uneven in places, and yeah, maybe some parts drag a little, but isn’t that kind of refreshing? It’s like hanging out with a quirky friend who doesn’t care about being cool—they just want to show you their world. So here’s the kicker: listening to this record made me realize how much we box music into categories. Is it pop? Is it rock? Who cares! Sometimes music is just… a vibe. And Side Effects? Yeah, it’s got plenty of those. If you’re looking for something different, give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if “Alkaloids” gets stuck in your head for days.
