Album Review: I’m Determined by The Wailers (1967) Alright, let’s talk about I’m Determined, the raw and gritty garage rock gem from The Wailers, released back in ’67. If you’re into that unpolished, straight-from-the-garage vibe, this one’s for you. It’s not perfect—heck, it’s not even trying to be—but that’s exactly what makes it so dang memorable. Released on the Viva label in the US, this album feels like a time capsule of youthful rebellion and untamed energy. Now, I gotta shout out two tracks that really stuck with me: the title track “I’m Determined” and “I Don’t Want To Follow You.” “I’m Determined” kicks things off with this relentless drive—you can practically hear the sweat dripping off the instruments. The guitar has this scratchy, almost-out-of-control tone that just grabs you by the collar. It’s not fancy, but it doesn’t need to be. The vocals are raw, kinda shouting their way through the lyrics, and honestly? It works. There’s something about the urgency in the delivery that makes you wanna crank the volume and nod your head till your neck hurts. Then there’s “I Don’t Want To Follow You,” which hits different but still packs a punch. This one’s got a bit more swagger, like the band’s daring you to keep up. The rhythm section is tight, and the lead guitar throws in these sneaky little licks that make you grin. Lyrically, it’s simple stuff, but isn’t that the beauty of garage rock? No overthinking, just pure emotion and attitude. It’s the kind of song that makes you wanna grab a broomstick, pretend it’s a mic, and belt it out in your living room. What I love about I’m Determined is how unapologetically real it feels. These guys weren’t chasing perfection—they were chasing a feeling. And man, do they nail it. Listening to this album feels like eavesdropping on a bunch of friends jamming in someone’s basement, fueled by cheap beer and big dreams. Here’s the thing, though—while most albums from ’67 were all about flower power or psychedelic experimentation, The Wailers stayed true to their roots. They didn’t care about trends; they just wanted to rock. And honestly? That’s kinda refreshing. So, if you’re looking for an album that’s polished and radio-friendly, this ain’t it. But if you wanna hear some honest-to-goodness garage rock that’ll make you feel alive, I’m Determined is worth a spin. Oh, and here’s a random thought: I bet the band would’ve killed it at a house party. Just saying.
