Black Oak Arkansas - Rebound

Review by Justin Roos

Rebound by Black Oak Arkansas: A Southern Rock Gem That Refuses to Quit Released in 1991 on Goldwax Records, Rebound is the kind of album that doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel—it just grabs it, spins it faster, and slams it down with a boogie-rock swagger. Black Oak Arkansas, hailing from the US, have always been kings of Southern Rock’s gritty underbelly, but here they bring their signature style into the '90s without losing an ounce of attitude. With genres spanning Southern Rock, Hard Rock, and Arena Rock, this record feels like a rowdy barroom brawl wrapped up in denim and leather. Let’s cut straight to what makes this album stick: two tracks stand out for different reasons. First off, “I’m On Your Side” punches through with its anthemic vibe—a track so unapologetically earnest you almost forget how cheesy it could’ve been. It’s got hooks sharp enough to reel you in while still feeling raw, like the band wrote it after one too many beers at a truck stop. The lyrics are simple—no pretentious metaphors or overthinking—but man, does it hit? When lead singer Jim Dandy growls out those words, you believe him. You feel like he’d throw hands for you if push came to shove. Then there’s “(I Want a Woman with) Big Titties,” because obviously, no Black Oak Arkansas album would be complete without some good ol’ fashioned irreverence. This tune isn’t going to win any awards for subtlety, but damn if it doesn’t capture the essence of Boogie Rock: loud, brash, and unfiltered fun. Sure, it might make you roll your eyes, but deep down, you can’t help but tap your foot along to the groove. It’s ridiculous, but intentionally so, and sometimes rock n’ roll needs exactly that—a little bit of tongue-in-cheek rebellion. The rest of Rebound follows suit, blending hard-driving riffs with heartfelt ballads and plenty of road-weary blues. Tracks like “Travelin’ Mode” showcase the band’s knack for storytelling, painting vivid pictures of life on the highway. Meanwhile, “You Can’t Keep a Good Band Down” serves as both a rallying cry and a middle finger to anyone who ever doubted these guys. They weren’t chasing trends—they were doubling down on who they were, warts and all. What really ties this thing together is its unpolished charm. Nothing about Rebound feels overly produced or shiny; instead, it wears its rough edges proudly. And honestly, that’s refreshing. In a world where every note seems calculated, Black Oak Arkansas delivers something real—even if it’s messy around the edges. Here’s the kicker though: listening to Rebound today feels kinda nostalgic—not just for the music itself, but for a time when rock was more about guts than glitz. But let’s be honest, not everything lands perfectly. Some songs drag, others repeat themselves (literally—"I’m On Your Side" shows up twice), and yeah, maybe we didn’t need multiple versions of certain tracks. Still, there’s something oddly endearing about the whole package. Like finding an old pair of boots covered in mud—you know they’ve been places, even if they’re not pristine. So, if you’re craving a dose of pure, unadulterated Southern Rock energy, give Rebound a spin. Just don’t expect perfection—expect personality. Oh, and hey, if nothing else sticks, at least you’ll walk away humming "(Big Titties)" under your breath… whether you want to admit it or not.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Rebound* by Black Oak Arkansas is a wild ride through Southern Rock and Hard Rock vibes. Released in 1991, it came out when grunge was starting to take over, but this band stayed true to their roots. One standout track, "I'm on Your Side," even made it onto the album twice—same song, different versions. And if you’re curious about diversity in their music, they threw in covers like "Desperado" by Eagles and "The Wanderer" by Dion. Oh, and let’s not forget the hilariously unfiltered "(I Want a Woman with) Big Titties"—because subtlety wasn’t really their thing. It’s a raw, unapologetic piece of rock history.

Black Oak Arkansas was one of the most underrated band in the 70's. Thier style of music was copied by many different bands. They inspired many bands that went on to fame. They will always be my 2nd most favorite band of all time. The first being Alice Cooper and the third being Frank Zappa.
