Album Review: "Give It Up" by Cheryl Porter (1998) Released in 1998 under the Italian label Rise, Cheryl Porter’s Give It Up is a vibrant slice of late-'90s Euro House and House music. With its infectious beats and polished production, this album feels like a time capsule of dance floors from two decades ago. The record's creators—producers D. Igor, L. Salamon, and S. Bordin, along with mixer Nick Ferrando—crafted a collection that still resonates with fans of electronic music today. The title track, Give It Up, immediately grabs your attention. It’s got that classic Euro House vibe—pulsating basslines, shimmering synths, and Cheryl Porter’s powerhouse vocals cutting through the mix. What makes it unforgettable is how effortlessly it blends energy and melody. You can almost picture yourself in some smoky Italian club, surrounded by strobe lights and a crowd losing itself to the rhythm. This version serves as the perfect introduction to the album’s theme: letting go and surrendering to the beat. Another standout is Give It Up (Paramour Peppino). This remix takes the original and gives it a sultry twist, layering in hypnotic grooves and subtle vocal edits that feel both intimate and expansive. It’s one of those tracks that sneaks up on you—the kind you might not notice at first but ends up being the one you replay on loop. The way it builds tension before dropping back into the chorus? Pure magic. The other remixes on the album, like Paramour Pinotti Dub and Nk 7" Vocal Dub, add variety without straying too far from the core sound. They’re solid, though they don’t quite reach the heights of the two mentioned above. Still, they show off the producers’ knack for experimentation within the House genre. Looking back, Give It Up might not have been groundbreaking, but it didn’t need to be. It captured the essence of its era while showcasing Cheryl Porter’s vocal talent and the creative vision of its producers. Listening to it now feels like revisiting an old friend—you know their quirks and flaws, but there’s still something comforting about their presence. Funny thing is, I wasn’t even into House music when this came out, yet here I am, writing about it over 20 years later. Guess that just proves good music has a way of sticking around—even when you least expect it.
