After The Love Is Gone Hermanos: Stanley Turrentine Kicks Jazz-Funk Into Overdrive (1981) Alright, let’s cut the crap. Stanley Turrentine’s After The Love Is Gone Hermanos is one of those albums that doesn’t just sit there collecting dust on your shelf. Released in ‘81 under Elektra, this thing hits like a freight train of smooth funk and soulful jazz. And yeah, it’s got Larry Dunn at the production helm—so you know it’s slicker than a greased-up saxophone. First up, “Hermanos (stereo).” Man, this track grabs you by the collar from second one. It’s funky as hell, with grooves so thick they could choke a bassline. Turrentine lets his sax wail like he's got something to prove, and trust me, he does. You can hear Jay Graydon’s influence all over this—it’s polished but raw, like someone slapped a suit on a street brawler. I remember this tune because it feels alive, like it’s daring you not to move. Screw subtlety; this is music for when you wanna feel invincible. Then there’s “After The Love Is Gone (stereo),” which flips the vibe entirely. Bill Champlin and David Foster kill it here, turning what could have been cheesy pop into something genuinely emotional. The melody sticks to your ribs, man. Like, you’ll be humming it days later while stuck in traffic or waiting for your coffee order. That sax solo? Pure catharsis. When Turrentine goes off near the end, it’s like he’s pouring every ounce of heartbreak into those notes. Damn near poetic if you ask me. What makes this album stick? It’s not perfect—not even close—but maybe that’s why it works. There’s grit beneath the gloss, a little dirt under its nails. Sure, some critics back then probably wrinkled their noses at how commercial it sounded compared to Turrentine’s earlier stuff. But screw ‘em. This record knows exactly what it wants to be: a powerhouse blend of jazz, pop, and funk that refuses to play it safe. Here’s the kicker though—listening to this now feels kinda prophetic. In an era where genres are mashed together faster than microwaved spaghetti, After The Love Is Gone Hermanos was doing it decades ago. Maybe we should’ve paid more attention. Or maybe I’m just saying that because I need another excuse to crank this bad boy again. Either way, respect.

Larry Dunn produced this album!!! There are several EWF members on this '81 album by Stanley Turrentine, which made Billboard magazine's Top Soul, Pop and Jazz Album Charts that year. The album made the top ten on the jazz charts. It also peaked at #162 on the pop charts but I don't know the soul position.

You've all heard the original of this classic by Earth Wind & Fire from their 1979 I Am album, well this is the smooth Jazz version recorded 2 years later by Jazz tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, who released this on his Tender Togetherness album with vocals by Lynn Davis
