The Chico's - De Lichtjes van Broadway

Alright, buckle up. We’re diving into De Lichtjes van Broadway by The Chico’s—a gem from 1955 that’s equal parts cheesy, folksy, and oddly unforgettable. Released under Philips in the Netherlands, this album straddles genres like Pop, Folk, World, and Country while leaning hard into Schlager and Country styles. It’s not perfect, but damn if it doesn’t stick to your brain like gum on a hot sidewalk. Let’s talk tracks. First up: “Rinkelende Sporen.” Man, this one hits you over the head with its clinking spurs and cowboy swagger. You can almost smell the horse sweat and dusty trails as the melody gallops along. It’s so relentlessly upbeat it borders on ridiculous, but that’s what makes it work. The lyrics are pure camp—like someone tried to write a Western movie theme without ever seeing an actual cowboy—but somehow, it just clicks. By the second chorus, you’ll be humming it against your will. Hate to admit it, but this track is catchy as hell. Then there’s “De Lichtjes van Broadway,” the title track that feels like walking through a carnival at night. The tune has this dreamy, almost melancholy vibe, like you’re staring at neon lights while nursing a broken heart. Unlike the rest of the album, which leans heavy on foot-stomping energy, this one slows things down and lets you breathe. Sure, the production is dated—it screams 1955—but that raw, unpolished charm is exactly why it sticks. It’s got soul, even if it’s buried under layers of old-school schmaltz. Now, let’s keep it real for a sec. This ain’t some groundbreaking masterpiece. If you’re looking for deep lyrical content or experimental soundscapes, go listen to something else. But here’s the kicker: De Lichtjes van Broadway doesn’t need to be those things. It’s a snapshot of its time—a quirky little artifact that captures the optimism and simplicity of post-war Europe. And yeah, maybe it’s corny as all get-out, but isn’t that kind of refreshing? Final thought: Listening to this album feels like finding an old black-and-white photo tucked inside a book—you don’t know who these people are, but their smiles make you grin anyway. Who knew Dutch cowboys could sound so… well, weirdly lovable?
