Album Review: The Way You Live Is Common by Chin Up, Kid If you’re into that raw, unfiltered pop-punk vibe with a dash of rock grit, The Way You Live Is Common by Chin Up, Kid is an album worth your time. Released back in 2017 under their own label (because who needs gatekeepers?), this record feels like a love letter to anyone who’s ever felt out of place but cool with it. It’s not perfect—heck, it doesn’t try to be—but there’s something real here, like hearing old friends spill their guts over power chords and punchy drum fills. Let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck with me long after the first listen: “Look Around” and “You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat.” “Look Around” kicks things off on a high note—or maybe a desperate one. Ben Jones’ vocals hit just the right mix of pissed-off and vulnerable, while Cheyenne Smith and Michael Myers tear through guitar riffs so catchy they’ll haunt your brain for days. There’s this moment near the chorus where everything drops out except for Ben’s voice, and man, it feels like he’s screaming right at you. Like, "Hey, wake up! Life’s messy, but aren’t we all kinda faking it anyway?" I dunno, maybe I’m reading too much into it, but damn if it doesn’t feel cathartic. Then there’s “You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat,” which might as well come with a warning label because it’s straight fire. Davey Farmer lays down some serious drumwork here, keeping the energy cranked up while Will Bright holds down the basslines like a champ. This track has these massive hooks that grab you by the collar and refuse to let go. What gets me most is how relatable the lyrics are—it’s like they took all those moments when life feels overwhelming and turned them into three minutes of pure adrenaline. You can practically hear the band sweating it out in the studio. Jordan Furr deserves props for mixing and mastering this thing; it sounds tight without losing its DIY charm. And shoutout to David Lehr for tracking those standout tracks (2 and 7). They really shine, even though the whole album bangs overall. Honestly, listening to The Way You Live Is Common feels like flipping through someone’s worn-out journal. It’s messy, heartfelt, and occasionally uncomfortable—but isn’t that what makes it human? By the end, you realize these guys aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel—they’re just giving us music that feels alive. Oh, and fun fact: somehow “Cause & Effect” made it onto the tracklist twice. Maybe it was intentional? Or maybe someone goofed. Either way, it adds to the charm. Because hey, perfection’s overrated, right? So yeah, give this album a spin. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself randomly shouting lines from “Look Around” during awkward silences.
