Cirrus - Drop The Break

Drop The Break by Cirrus: A Chaotic Masterpiece That Still Slaps Alright, let’s cut the fluff. Drop The Break by Cirrus isn’t just another electronic album from 1997—it’s a wild ride through every subgenre you didn’t know could coexist. Jungle? Check. Breakbeat? Hell yeah. Ambient vibes creeping into speed garage? Sure, why not. This thing is all over the place, but somehow it works. Produced by DJ Aaron Carter (no relation to that other Carter) and Stephen James Barry, this record feels like they threw everything at the wall and kept whatever stuck. And damn, did some of it stick hard. Now, if I had to pick two tracks that still rattle my brain, it’d be “Drop The Break (Eklektic Mix)” and “Leap Into the Light.” First up, “Drop The Break (Eklektic Mix).” Yo, this track hits like a freight train with glitchy breaks layered on top of more breaks. It's messy as hell, but in the best way possible. The bassline grinds so hard it almost sounds like your speakers are gonna explode. Every time I hear those chopped-up samples, I’m reminded of sweaty clubs where people lost their minds dancing to stuff they couldn’t even describe back then. You can tell DJ Aaron Carter wasn’t trying to play it safe here—he wanted chaos, and he delivered. Then there’s “Leap Into the Light,” which flips the script completely. If “Drop The Break” is an adrenaline rush, this one’s more like floating weightless in space. The ambient pads swell up slow, giving you room to breathe before kicking into a downtempo groove that makes you want to close your eyes and drift away. But don’t get too comfy—just when you think it’s gonna stay chill, BAM, a breakbeat sneaks in outta nowhere and pulls you right back into the mix. It’s disorienting as hell, but that’s what makes it unforgettable. Here’s the kicker though: for all its experimentation, Drop The Break doesn’t feel pretentious. Yeah, it jumps genres faster than most DJs change playlists, but it never loses sight of being FUN. Whether you’re blasting it in your car or zoning out alone, this album grabs hold and doesn’t let go. And honestly? Listening to this now feels kinda surreal. Like, how did something this nuts come out in '97 without blowing everyone’s minds wide open? Maybe we weren’t ready for it yet. Or maybe Cirrus was just ahead of their time, dropping beats that still slap harder than half the stuff today. Either way, this album deserves props—not just for what it did back then, but for how fresh it still sounds. So yeah, give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors start wondering why things keep breaking around your house.

A very astute big beat album that accurately appropriates hip-hop beats and phrasing. I agree as to what has been said: America's version of The Prodigy, but more easily digestible and (mostly) devoid of pretense. Satisfying dance music...

This isn't even worth attempting, without either isolation ear buds; or home speakers that will make your neighbors question your sanity
