Album Review: El Paso / Theme From Malamondo (Funny World) by Grady Martin Grady Martin’s El Paso / Theme From Malamondo (Funny World) might not be the kind of album you stumble upon every day, but it’s a little gem worth your attention. Released under Festival Records in Australia, this record straddles genres like Stage & Screen and Pop with surprising ease. It feels like a time capsule from an era when music for films and quirky pop tunes had a certain charm that modern stuff just can’t replicate. Let’s dive into two standout tracks. First up is “El Paso.” This track grabs your ear right away—it’s got this twangy guitar riff that feels cinematic without being over-the-top. You can almost picture cowboys riding across a dusty desert or some dramatic scene unfolding on screen. The melody sticks with you because it’s simple yet evocative, the kind of tune that plays in your head long after the needle lifts off the vinyl. It’s no wonder it became iconic; it taps into something timeless about storytelling through sound. Then there’s “Theme From Malamondo (Funny World),” which couldn’t feel more different if it tried. Where “El Paso” is rugged and raw, this one leans playful and smooth. The orchestration has a lightness to it, like a carefree stroll through a European cityscape—fitting, considering its connection to Italian cinema. There’s a cheekiness here that makes it hard not to smile. It reminds me of those old movie montages where characters are flitting around doing absurd things, all set against a bouncy soundtrack. If nothing else, it’s proof that Grady Martin knew how to adapt his style depending on the vibe he was going for. What’s cool about this album is how it balances these contrasting moods. One minute you’re in the Wild West, the next you’re sipping espresso at a café somewhere far away. That diversity keeps things interesting. Plus, as someone who digs vintage sounds, hearing records like this always feels like uncovering a hidden chapter in music history. Honestly, listening to El Paso / Theme From Malamondo (Funny World) made me realize how much we take mood-setting music for granted nowadays. Back then, artists like Grady Martin were crafting pieces that weren’t just songs—they were experiences. And maybe that’s why albums like this still resonate, even decades later. Or maybe I’m just a sucker for retro vibes. Either way, give it a spin—you won’t regret it. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find yourself humming “El Paso” while making dinner tonight.

My good friend Henry Jerome hired Grady Martin to play guitar an on may of the productions done at Owen Bradley Studios when Henry managed Johnny Burnette and the Rock'n Rill Trio. Grady will always the best and no one can take his place at his musicianship.

Though I loved Marty Robbins and his voice, I've long believed that without Grady Martin's back-up, El Paso would not have been the hit that it was.

Grady Martin was in Willie Nelson's band for several years. I saw them in 1981 at Floores' Country Store near San Antonio. (Grady released a scarce 10" Decca Lp record in the 1950's that is hotter than his usual 12" stuff. He could pick it all.)

I have played guitars for some sixty years now and am only now beginning to be able to approach some of the songs of Grady Martin---after 60 years!!! He is one of those artists who quickly become national treasures, and yet, he was always quite pleased to remain humbly in the background Grady, you were, and are, a legendary musical GIANT! Wish you were still with us!

Often it is the background studio musician that adds that certain ingredient that seasons the vocals of the performer making a song unforgettable!

Thanks Grady for wonderful performances and the humility to stand in the background.

Everyone, this is my grandfather. My name is Leand Martin, and this man, this superb musician, was one of my many inspirations to get into music. Unfortunately, I didn't know that he or my father, Joe Martin, were musicians until after they'd passed on from this world, but they both motivated me to pursue music, even if it wasn't in country. I'm currently working on my first album with hopes of recording, producing and publishing it sometime this summer, and there will be many more to come, all because of Dad and Grandpa instilling that mindset into me.

Love Grady's playing!!! I use do not know who backed up Marty Robbins for a while. But, when I found out who it was I have always been a fan of Grady. Did he play many falmico stuff for Marty? I know he also played for Elvis Presley, and Johnny Horton. Two other big people I love.
