Richard Walters - Brittle Bones

Brittle Bones by Richard Walters: A Heartfelt Journey Through Acoustic Folk Rock Let’s get one thing straight—Richard Walters’ Brittle Bones isn’t just another album you toss on in the background while folding laundry. Nope. This little gem from 2008, hailing straight outta the UK, feels like it was crafted for those late-night drives when your thoughts are all over the place and the road ahead is dark but kinda beautiful too. The genres? Pop/Rock with a strong lean into Rock itself. But don’t let that fool you—it’s not some loud, flashy production meant to blow your speakers out. Instead, it’s got this stripped-down vibe, leaning heavily into acoustic tones and folk rock vibes. It’s raw, honest, and at times so intimate it feels like Walters is sitting right there beside you, whispering stories only he knows how to tell. Two tracks stuck with me big time: “True Love Will Find You In The End” and—you guessed it—the title track, “Brittle Bones.” “True Love Will Find You In The End” hits different. Like, really different. There’s something about the way Walters sings it—it’s fragile yet hopeful, like he’s been through the wringer but still believes in love even if it doesn’t always make sense. The melody sneaks up on you, soft guitar strums wrapping around lyrics that feel more like a conversation than a song. I remember listening to this during a breakup (yeah, cheesy, I know), and instead of wallowing, it made me think maybe heartbreak ain’t forever. Maybe there’s light somewhere down the line. That’s what good music does—it pulls you back together when you’re falling apart. Then there’s “Brittle Bones,” which honestly feels like the heartbeat of the whole record. It’s hauntingly simple, just his voice and an acoustic guitar doing their thing. But damn, does it pack a punch. The imagery in the lyrics—brittle bones breaking under pressure, trying to hold on—it’s hard not to relate. We’ve all felt brittle at some point, haven’t we? Like life’s weight might snap us clean in half. Yet somehow, the song doesn’t leave you feeling crushed. It’s comforting, weirdly enough, like someone saying, “Hey, I see you struggling, and yeah, it sucks, but you’re still here.” Oh, shoutout to Julia Parkinson for the artwork—it matches the mood perfectly. Simple, understated, but full of emotion. Just like the music inside. So, yeah, Brittle Bones isn’t perfect. Some songs blend together after a few listens, and sure, it could use a bit more variety. But honestly? That’s part of its charm. It’s unpolished in the best way possible, like a handwritten letter instead of a typed email. Listening to it reminds me that imperfection can be beautiful—and sometimes, it sticks with you longer than anything shiny ever could. Here’s the kicker though: Every time I hear these songs now, I wonder where Richard Walters is today. Did he find his true love? Are his bones still brittle, or did they grow stronger with time? Funny how an album can make you care so much about someone you’ve never met.

this cover is the first time i ever heard this song, its crazy to see that was like 12 years ago now. and even after hearing the original and all of the other covers, this will always be the best version to me. even better than the original. Richard Walters just delivers it so beautifully.

I usually don't like renditions of this song, never thought anyone captured it like Daniel Johnston. Not even the Beck version. But I have to admit, Richard Walters does a perfect rendition. It's the tone of his voice, it expresses it perfectly. I love this rendition. I listen to it more than the original.

Screw the pissing contest. What do y'all think of Daniel's art? His depth?

There's no need to sound quite so hostile, I was merely pointing out that the version I have heard was with an out-of-tune guitar. I didn't realise there were other versions, and I'm definitely going to listen to others now that I know that. Musical taste is all a matter of opinion, and I totally understand that you prefer the original, usually I prefer originals. Sorry for sounding so ignorant...

If that's the reason why you like this version more, then you need to get your musical priorities in order. I'm not saying this version is "Emotionless." However it does seem to miss the point. Daniel's songs are meant to be covered so this guy is on the right track, but he certainly hasn't bested Daniel's original version.

I'd also like to point out that in the final studio version that Daniel recorded the guitar IS NOT out of tune at all. You may have heard a bootleg seeing that Daniel was know for recording his songs over and over again. On old tape recorders, other people's answering machines, anything that could record audio basically.

Listen to the studio version. If you say that's out of tune, then i would recommend you do a little tonal recognition training.

I don't think you can say that this is emotionless...

Took all of the beauty and emotion out of the original. Johnston's version was so much more real and raw.

While I agree with your point, it is a cover, and isn't supposed to sound EXACTLY like the original. I too love the original though.
