Senseless Death: A Thrashy, Grindy, Punk-Infused Chaos You Didn’t Know You Needed Released in 1989, Senseless Death by Various is like that wild buddy who shows up uninvited to your party but ends up being the life of it. This compilation album brings together a chaotic mix of thrash, grindcore, punk, and hardcore from both Germany and the US—basically all the stuff you need for a good mosh pit or an existential crisis. Released on Nuclear Blast (you know, the label with more metal cred than your favorite denim vest) and Ever Rat Records, this record screams raw energy. And if you’re into gnarly artwork, Harald Stumpp’s cover has got you covered—literally. Now, let’s talk tracks because there are some real gems here that stick out like a sore thumb at a tea party. First up, “Satan’s Doormat.” Yeah, I said it. It’s as unholy as it sounds, but damn, does it slap. The riffs hit harder than your ex’s new Instagram captions, and the vocals? Pure gravel-in-your-throat goodness. Listening to this feels like getting punched in the face…in a good way. Like, "Wow, my jaw hurts, but also, wow, what just happened?" It’s one of those songs where you don’t know whether to headbang or cry, so you do both. Classic move. Another banger worth mentioning is “Deadly Euphoria.” If euphoria could kill—and honestly, sometimes happiness feels lethal—this track would be its theme song. The live version included on the album adds that extra layer of chaos, like someone spilled beer on the mixing board mid-recording. But hey, isn’t that what makes it authentic? There’s something oddly satisfying about hearing musicians lose their minds while still staying vaguely on beat. You can practically smell the sweat-soaked basement gigs when this one kicks in. Oh, and props to Markus Staiger for producing this mess-turned-masterpiece. He somehow wrangled these wildly different styles into a cohesive trainwreck of sound. Djamil Mehtieff mastered the whole thing too, which explains why even though it’s rough around the edges, it doesn’t sound like someone recorded it on a potato. What strikes me most about Senseless Death is how ridiculous yet earnest it feels. Tracks like “Zombie Dismemberment” and “Chemical Death” might seem over-the-top, but they remind us not to take ourselves too seriously. Life’s short; why not scream about zombies and vomitheads every now and then? Plus, with titles like “Big Fat Muffin” thrown into the mix, it’s clear these guys had a sense of humor—or maybe just really bad catering at the studio. In the end, Senseless Death isn’t perfect. Some tracks feel repetitive, others veer dangerously close to noise pollution, and yeah, the production screams ‘80s DIY. But isn’t that kind of the point? This album is like a time capsule of youthful rebellion, frozen in all its gritty glory. So crank it up, embrace the chaos, and remember: Satan probably needs a new doormat anyway. Final thought: If this album were a person, it’d definitely get kicked out of a library—but invited back to the afterparty.
