Crowded House - Homebrew

Review by Lee Rice

Alright, let’s get into it. Homebrew by Crowded House isn’t your typical shiny pop-rock record—this thing has grit under its nails and a chip on its shoulder. Released in 1998 outta Australia (yeah, Frenz Of The Enz dropped this gem), it's not just some cookie-cutter collection of hits. Nah, this album feels like an unfiltered conversation with the band over beers at 2 AM—raw, messy, but damn compelling. First off, let’s talk genres because this sucker doesn’t sit still. You’ve got Pop/Rock, Alternative/Indie Rock, College Rock—you name it. It’s all mashed together like someone threw a bunch of puzzle pieces in a blender and hit "puree." But somehow? Somehow it works. Tracks like “Black & White Boy” slap hard with their punchy hooks and sneering attitude. That bassline alone could start a riot if you play it loud enough. And then there’s “Born to Be Wild,” which ain’t no cover—it’s more like Crowded House took the spirit of Steppenwolf and gave it a good kick in the teeth. It’s wild, untamed, and straight-up unforgettable. Like, who even tries to remake that classic without losing their minds? These guys did, and they pulled it off. Now here’s where things get sticky: “As Sure As I Am.” This track is haunting as hell. It creeps up on you slow, like a shadow stretching across the floor at sunset. The vocals are raw, almost like Neil Finn forgot he was recording and just started spilling his guts instead. By the time the chorus kicks in, you’re hooked—like, don’t-bother-changing-the-song hooked. It sticks to your brain like gum on a hot sidewalk. Then there’s “Distant Sun,” which flips the vibe entirely. It’s bouncy, kinda quirky, and gives off major "college road trip" energy. If you don’t find yourself humming along after one listen, check your pulse—you might be dead. But hey, this album ain’t perfect. Some tracks feel repetitive (“Show A Little Mercy” shows up twice, seriously?) and others drag so hard you’ll wanna skip ‘em altogether. But honestly? That adds to its charm. It’s flawed, sure, but so are we all. And maybe that’s why Homebrew resonates—it’s real. No plastic smiles or polished edges, just honest-to-god music made by people who sound like they’ve lived through some crap. So yeah, I remember “Black & White Boy” for its swagger and “As Sure As I Am” for its soul-crushing honesty. They’re polar opposites, but both leave a mark. Reflection time: Listening to this album feels like finding an old mixtape in your car’s glove compartment years later. You don’t expect much, but when you hit play, it punches you right in the chest. Weird flex, but true.

Crowded House are a rock band formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1985 but based in Auckland, New Zealand, since 1988. Originally active from 1985 to 1996. The founding members were New Zealander (vocalist, guitarist, primary songwriter) and Australians (drums) and (bass). Later band members included Neil Finn's brother , and Americans and . Mark Hart who had toured with the group joined as a permanent member in 1993. Founding drummer Hester left in the band in May 1994 citing family reasons. He briefly returned for their "Farewell to the World" concerts in Melbourne and Sydney in 1996 and also played on three new tracks recorded for the album "Recurring Dream" (1996). His replacement was Peter Jones who remained with the group until they disbanded in 1996. On 26 March 2005, Hester died by suicide. In 2006, the group re-formed with new drummer Matt Sherrod and released two further albums in 2007 and 2010. In November 2016 they were inducted into the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Hall of Fame. On 9 December 2019, Neil Finn unveiled via his official web site that the band's new line-up - alongside himself and Seymour - would add , and . As a result, Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod would no longer participate. Although other New Zealand solo acts have topped the US charts, the group hold the distinction of being the only New Zealand band to have made it to #2 in the US Billboard Singles chart, with their single "Don't Dream It's Over".

It’s packed with genres ranging from Pop/Rock to Alternative/Indie Rock, and even dips into College Rock vibes. The album includes tracks like "Black & White Boy" and "Distant Sun," which showcase their knack for blending heartfelt lyrics with catchy melodies.
