Blowhard by Duh: A Riotous Dive into 1991’s Alternative Edge Released in 1991, Blowhard by Duh is a chaotic yet strangely cohesive mash-up of rock, alternative, and pop/rock influences. With its roots firmly planted in punk, post-punk, and noise aesthetics, this album doesn’t just sit comfortably within one genre—it sprawls across several, leaving listeners both disoriented and delighted. Released via Boner Records and Tupelo Recording Company in the US, Canada, and Europe, it carries an underground grit that feels raw but never lazy. One standout track that sticks with you is “Tugboat Anchor.” It’s not just the title that grabs attention; it’s how the song barrels forward like a runaway freight train. The interplay between Mike Morasshole’s basslines and Herr Gustav’s drum programming creates this relentless pulse that refuses to let up. And then there’s El Bobo’s vocals—half-shouted, half-sung with a snarl that could cut glass. You don’t forget this track because it somehow manages to feel both unhinged and meticulously crafted at the same time. It’s as if they took all their pent-up frustrations from touring and funneled them into three minutes of pure sonic rebellion. Another gem worth mentioning is “Spaghetti and Red Wine” (or “Spaghetti And Red Wine,” depending on which version you’re looking at). This tune has a swagger to it, thanks largely to Tom Flynn’s pedal steel guitar work weaving through the mix like a drunken cowboy stumbling home after last call. There’s something oddly cinematic about it—like you can picture some grainy black-and-white film playing while someone drives aimlessly down a desert highway. The lyrics are cryptic enough to keep you guessing but vivid enough to paint little snapshots in your mind. Plus, who doesn’t love a song that makes you crave pasta halfway through? What really ties Blowhard together though isn’t just the music—it’s the credits themselves. From Harvey Bennett Stafford and Tricia Keightley’s artwork to Jonathan Burnside’s production chops, every piece feels intentional, even when the result sounds messy. That messiness, however, is part of its charm. It’s like overhearing a heated argument between punk rock and alt-country—they might not agree on much, but damn if the conversation isn’t fascinating. In hindsight, Blowhard feels less like a product of its era and more like a weird cousin crashing the family reunion. Sure, it shares DNA with other ‘90s alt-rock albums, but it marches to its own beat—one that’s equal parts sloppy and sharp. Listening to it now, decades later, it’s hard not to wonder what would’ve happened if Duh had gotten more mainstream attention. Would they have cleaned up their sound? Or doubled down on the chaos? Ultimately, Blowhard reminds us that sometimes the best art comes from throwing everything against the wall and seeing what sticks—even if half of it slides off onto the floor.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The album *Blowhard* by Duh is a wild mix of genres and styles, but what really stands out is the sheer variety of instruments played by Tom Flynn. He handled lead guitar, rhythm guitar, pedal steel guitar, banjo, and even the dobro! It’s like he was determined to cover every possible sound on his own. Add in some punk energy, alternative vibes, and a dash of noise, and you’ve got an album that feels chaotic yet strangely cohesive. Oh, and did I mention there are two versions of "Spaghetti And Red Wine" and "Hot Day For The Ice Cream Man"? Gotta love a little repetition with a twist.
