Osculum Infame Funeral - Split Demo

Split Demo by Osculum Infame & Funeral: A Raw Black Metal Assault from 1996 France, 1996. The underground metal scene was already teeming with raw aggression and unholy riffs, but Split Demo by Osculum Infame and Funeral carved its own niche in the chaos. This isn’t some polished-over-time reissue; this is black metal as it should be—dirty, unapologetic, and straight-up nasty. Released under the A.M.S.G. label, this little gem splits its runtime between two bands who clearly didn’t give a damn about trends or commercial appeal. Let’s dive into what makes this demo worth your time. First up, “Whisper Of The Witch” (Osculum Infame side). Holy hell, this track hits you like a rusty blade to the gut. Drums courtesy of Krof are relentless, pounding away like war drums summoning an army of darkness. Hades’ guitar work on this one is pure fire—dissonant chords that claw at your ears while his bass lines rumble beneath like distant thunder. And don’t even get me started on Xaphan’s vocals—they’re not just screamed; they’re vomited out in pure hatred. You can practically smell sulfur burning through your speakers. It’s the kind of song that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go until it’s done spitting venom in your face. Then there’s “Unholy Mighty Blood” (Funeral side), which takes things even darker if you can imagine that. Funeral brings their own brand of filth here, with music written entirely by the mysterious figure behind the project. The intro feels like crawling through a crypt—slow, ominous, and suffocating. When the blast beats kick in, though, all bets are off. Vlad Drakul and co.’s performance oozes malice, layering shrieks over Denis Barjettas’ haunting keyboard touches. Those keys add a chilling atmosphere, like hearing ghosts wail in the distance. If you’ve got any shred of sanity left after listening to this, congrats—you’re stronger than most. What sticks with me about these tracks isn’t just how brutal they sound—it’s how real they feel. No fancy studio tricks, no pandering to mainstream tastes. Just raw emotion poured into every note. Sylvain Carel’s engineering might not win awards, but it fits perfectly. The mix is muddy as hell, but honestly? That’s part of the charm. It’s like eavesdropping on a ritual you weren’t supposed to witness. Here’s the kicker: despite being nearly three decades old, Split Demo still sounds fresher than half the garbage passing for extreme metal today. Maybe it’s because so many modern acts focus too much on technicality and forget the soul of the genre—the hate, the rebellion, the sheer fuck-you attitude. Osculum Infame and Funeral didn’t need to try hard. They just were. And hey, fun fact—if you ever meet someone claiming to love black metal but haven’t heard this demo, question everything they say. Seriously.
