Album Review: Boomslang by Dane Jolly Dane Jolly’s Boomslang, released in 2000 under Sunkissed Records, is one of those hidden gems in the electronic music scene that deserves a second look—or listen. With its roots firmly planted in Trance and Progressive House, this album feels like a late-night drive through neon-lit city streets. It's not perfect, but it’s got personality—and sometimes, that’s all you need. The standout track for me has to be “Boomslang (Super Fly’s Vision Tool Mix).” This version takes the original vibe and cranks it up with layers of hypnotic synths and a bassline that just won’t quit. There’s something about how the beat builds—it doesn’t rush you; instead, it pulls you deeper into its groove. You know those moments when a song makes your shoulders drop and your head nod without even thinking about it? That’s what this mix does. It’s smooth, clever, and kinda sneaky—like Super Fly knew exactly what they were doing. Then there’s “Boomslang (Submission’s Reworked Mix),” which flips the script entirely. If the first track is sleek and polished, this one feels rawer, grittier. The reworked mix introduces darker tones and sharper edges, giving it an almost edgy, rebellious feel. It’s the kind of track that grabs hold of you mid-dancefloor and says, "Hey, stay awhile." It’s memorable because it shows off the versatility of the source material while still keeping true to the energy of the album. What sticks with me most about Boomslang is how unapologetically 2000 it feels. Listening to it now, two decades later, it’s like stepping back into a time capsule where Y2K panic was fresh, and everyone was trying to figure out what the future would sound like. Turns out, maybe Dane Jolly had part of the answer. In hindsight, I think the album’s charm lies in its imperfections. Some transitions are clunky, and a few elements feel dated—but isn’t that what gives art its soul? At the end of the day, Boomslang reminds us that music doesn’t always have to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes it just needs to make you move—and trust me, this album does that. Oh, and here’s the kicker: I swear every time I hear these tracks, I get cravings for Orbit gum. Weird, right?
