Album Review: Electronics Tar And Sehtar by Dariush DolatShahi Let’s get one thing straight—this album is not your typical Friday night playlist. Electronics Tar And Sehtar (2017) by Dariush DolatShahi feels like stepping into a dream where ancient Persian strings meet glitchy electronic beats. It’s folk, it’s world music, it’s experimental madness all rolled into one. Released under The Loathed Sound Department in the US, this record doesn’t just push boundaries—it obliterates them. The first track that grabs you by the soul is "Hur (Tar And Electronic)." Imagine sitting cross-legged on a Persian rug while some cosmic DJ messes with time itself. The tar—a traditional stringed instrument—sings out these haunting melodies, but then BAM, here comes this stuttering beat that sounds like robots learning to dance for the first time. You don’t know whether to cry or nod your head. That tension? It sticks with you. Like, days later, I found myself humming parts of it in the shower. Weird, right? Then there’s "Shabistan (Sehtar And Electronic)." This one hits different. The sehtar has this delicate, almost fragile tone, like whispers from another era. But instead of letting it stay soft and safe, DolatShahi throws in these bursts of musique concrète chaos—random clicks, hisses, maybe even someone dropping pots and pans in the background? At first listen, it felt jarring. By the third spin, though, I realized how perfectly imperfect it was. It’s messy, sure, but isn’t life too? There’s beauty in its unpredictability. What makes this album so unforgettable is its refusal to fit neatly into any box. One moment, you’re sipping tea in an old-world café; the next, you’re lost in a neon-lit labyrinth of soundscapes. It’s disorienting, yeah, but also kinda magical. If you’re looking for something easy, skip this. But if you want music that challenges you, that makes you feel things you can’t quite put into words—this is it. And honestly? Listening to this album made me wonder: What would happen if Rumi wrote poetry about synthesizers? Would he call them “electronic dervishes”? Food for thought.
