About Debussy Orchestre Symphonique De Boston, Pierre Monteux
Born: August 22, 1862 (Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France).
Died: March 25, 1918 (Paris, France).
Claude Debussy was a French composer. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Debussy's music frees itself of the academicism of the late nineteenth century (in particular that of the Austro / German School) to offer new perspectives and dimensions to twentieth century music.
Through the use of pentatonic scales, of the whole tone scale, he returns to the ambiguity of modal systems and accomplishes a revolution of traditional harmony, different from the Wagnerian revolution.
Debussy's music frees itself from the tyranny of the bar, which with its periodic accents forces the rhythm to a pre-ordered repetitions; as a consequence of these metric-harmonic innovations the classical forms are abandoned.

11:15 Those cellos soar like seagulls. No other conductor has ever matched this!
8:05 Here they get the dramatic pause PERFECT! ? It’s surprisingly rare for orchestras to execute this key section so well.
4:00 The tremolo on those violas is insane. Every time I listen to this recording it sounds better.
The oboes sound clear and exquisite!

0:10 ?
Shortly before the end, the engineer (or else the poster) turned the sound level down several notches. A most unfortunate disfiguring of this otherwise fine Munch/BSO performance. Special shout-out to Roger Voisin, principal trumpet, and Harold "Tommy" Thompson, the great cymbalist of the BSO during the 1950's.
14:00 ??
Incredible! This is *perfect*! Seems like he really understood the piece.
21:45 ?
This is acoustically brighter and clearer than most modern recordings I’ve listened to!

The Noctures on this cd are the VERY WORST recording of my 15 Nocturne collection, Boulez completely failed in this Cleveland recording. Have not listened to La Mer as yet,, up next on my cd player,,,be back with that comment. But his Noc here, is HORRIBLE,
just by looking at the times 24 minutes at least he has the tempos right,,, hummm ok into the 1st minute,, sounds pretty **PERFUNCTORY** to my ears,, which is why I never bought this cd,, but as a COMPLETEIST in La Mer and Nocturnes,, I just bought the cd off ebay for $7,, and sure enough my previous research was a 100% correct SPOT ON< Its a complete total DUD,,and will get up from my seat and grab the cd and immediaetly throw this cd in the trash can. = worthless garbage.

Other than Ansermet, I can't recall any other conductor of Boulez's stature that had a background in mathematics. I would be very interested to know what they thought of each other, for obvious reasons.
