Double Cross by DJ Bold: A Raw Slice of 1999 Aussie Electronica That Still Hits Hard Alright, let’s talk about Double Cross by DJ Bold. Released in '99 under VAST Recordings, this album is one of those hidden gems from Australia's electronic scene that feels like it was made for late-night drives or sweaty underground raves. It’s not perfect—hell, it doesn’t even try to be—but there’s something gritty and real about it that sticks with you. The genre? Tech House and Techna (yeah, techno too). But don’t go thinking this is some polished Ibiza mixtape; nah, it’s way more raw than that. The kind of stuff where you can almost hear the clink of beer bottles and feel the sticky dancefloor beneath your feet. And while all four tracks have their moments, two really stood out to me. First up, “Defective.” Man, this track slaps harder than most things I’ve heard lately. There’s this relentless beat that just drills into your brain, but what gets me every time is how chaotic it feels without losing control. Like, yeah, it sounds kinda broken—that distorted bassline wobbles around like it’s fighting back against the rest of the track—but somehow it works. You know when you’re listening to music and suddenly everything else fades away? That happened with “Defective.” I couldn’t tell you why exactly—it’s not even my usual vibe—but damn if it didn’t make me wanna move. Then there’s “Eye Laser,” which is... well, weird as hell. In the best way possible. This one starts off slow, almost teasing you with these eerie synths that sound like they’re straight out of an old sci-fi movie. Then BAM! It drops into this pulsing rhythm that feels equal parts hypnotic and unsettling. Honestly, I kept coming back to it because it felt like nothing else on the album. It’s the kind of track that makes you question whether you’re vibing or just losing your mind. Either way, it’s unforgettable. Now, full disclosure: I’m no expert on tech house or whatever subgenre nerds would stick this in. But what I do know is that Double Cross has character. It’s got grit. It’s unapologetically itself, flaws and all. Listening to it now, over two decades later, feels like finding an old Polaroid photo at the bottom of a drawer—you remember exactly how it felt when it was taken. And here’s the thing: maybe part of why this album stuck with me is because it reminds me of simpler times. Back then, music wasn’t about streaming numbers or social media hype. It was just… music. Something someone poured their heart into, hit record, and hoped people would dig. So yeah, give Double Cross a spin if you ever stumble across it. Just don’t expect perfection. Expect something real. Oh, and hey—if anyone knows what happened to DJ Bold after ’99, let me know. Dude deserves more credit than he probably got.
