Album Review: I Know I Can Make It by DJ Dealer – A 1995 House Gem That Still Slaps Alright, let’s talk about I Know I Can Make It, the 1995 house music album from DJ Dealer that feels like it was beamed straight outta a neon-lit club in '90s America. Released on Mindfood Records (a label name that makes me hungry every time I say it), this record is pure vibes. Produced and arranged by Jim Stout and DJ Dealer themselves, it’s got that raw, unfiltered energy only '90s electronic music can deliver. And trust me, it still bangs harder than your Spotify algorithm. Now, onto the tracks. There are four total—two versions of “I Know I Can Make It” and two parts of “Sugar Twist.” If you’re short on time, just hit play on the Original version of “I Know I Can Make It.” This track hits different. It opens with a bassline so smooth it could butter toast, followed by these hypnotic keyboard riffs courtesy of Jim Stout. The groove builds slowly, teasing you like someone who knows they’ve got all night to keep you hooked. By the time the beat drops fully, you’ll feel like you’ve been handed the keys to the VIP section of life itself. Honestly, it’s one of those songs where you think, "Yeah, maybe I can make it too," even if you're currently eating cereal for dinner. Then there’s “Sugar Twist (Part One).” Oh man, this one slaps in a completely different way. Imagine being at a house party where everyone suddenly starts doing awkward yet endearing dance moves because the rhythm won’t let them stand still. That’s “Sugar Twist.” Part One leans into its quirky charm without overdoing it—there’s this playful bounce to the percussion that sticks in your head long after the song ends. You might catch yourself humming it while stuck in traffic or waiting for your coffee order. Not annoyingly catchy, but more like an old friend showing up when you least expect it. The remix of “I Know I Can Make It” deserves a shoutout too—it cranks things up a notch with sharper beats and a slightly darker vibe, perfect for anyone who likes their house music with a dash of mystery. But honestly? The original steals the show here. Sometimes less really is more. So yeah, I Know I Can Make It isn’t some flashy concept album trying to reinvent the wheel—it’s just solid, soulful house music made by people who clearly loved what they were doing. Listening to it now feels like finding an old mixtape in the back of your closet and realizing how much better music used to sound before algorithms took over. Final thought: If aliens ever invade Earth and demand proof we had good taste, I’m handing them this album. Then again, given how funky it is, they might just start dancing instead of destroying us. Either way, win-win.
