Elin Prøysen - Emigrantviser

Album Review: Emigrantviser by Elin Prøysen Alright, so let’s talk about Emigrantviser, this little Norwegian gem from 1975. It’s folk music with a capital F, and if you’re into stories of longing, leaving home, and chasing dreams across oceans, then buckle up—this one’s for you. Elin Prøysen teamed up with Willy Andresens Ensemble (nice name, huh?) and dropped this heartfelt record under EMI. Producer Erik Botolfsen and tech wizards Ingar Helgesen and Rolf Kjernet made sure it all sounded crisp too. But what really sticks here is the raw emotion in the songs. Now, I gotta shout out two tracks that stayed stuck in my head like gum on a shoe. First up: “Amerikafeber.” Man, oh man. That title translates to "American Fever," which already sets the vibe. You can almost picture someone staring at an ocean, dreaming of streets paved with gold—or maybe just a better life. The melody feels bittersweet, like saying goodbye but also kinda excited for what’s next. And Elin? She sings it like she lived it. Then there’s “Farvel Du Moder Norge” (“Farewell, Mother Norway”). This one hits different, especially if you’ve ever had to leave something or someone behind. It’s slow, steady, and packed with feels. Like, imagine standing on a boat waving goodbye while Norway fades into the distance—that’s this song. There’s no flashy gimmicks, just pure storytelling through music. Honestly, it gave me goosebumps. The rest of the album keeps the theme going strong—emigration blues mixed with hope and nostalgia. Tracks like “Oleana” and “Den Norske Pige I Amerika” feel like chapters in a storybook, each telling its own tale of struggle and survival. Even though the album came out nearly 50 years ago, these stories still resonate. People move countries, chase dreams, and wrestle with homesickness even today. Here’s the kicker though—I didn’t expect to get so wrapped up in this album. I mean, it’s not exactly Spotify’s Top Hits, right? But there’s something about the simplicity of it all. No autotune, no flashy production tricks—just real voices and instruments telling real stories. And honestly, listening to it felt like sitting by a fire hearing tales from your grandparents. Weird flex, but I’m not mad about it. So yeah, if you’re into folk music or just want something that’ll tug at your heartstrings, give Emigrantviser a spin. Just don’t blame me if you start randomly booking flights to Norway after track three.
