Album Review: Ogro by Ennio Morricone – A Haunting Masterpiece of Sound and Emotion Ennio Morricone’s Ogro, released in 1984, is a gem tucked away in the vast catalog of one of cinema’s greatest composers. Falling under the Stage & Screen genre with styles rooted in Soundtrack and Score, this Italian album feels like stepping into a dimly lit room where every note carries weight. Backed by labels Phoenix and CAM, it’s not just another soundtrack—it’s an emotional journey crafted with precision. Morricone doesn’t just compose; he tells stories without words. And on Ogro, that storytelling shines through tracks like “Missione Ogro” and “Canto Basco.” These pieces stick with you long after the music fades. Take “Missione Ogro,” for example. It opens with a creeping tension, strings pulling at your nerves like threads unraveling slowly. The track builds into something almost unbearable—a sonic representation of suspense itself. You can practically see shadows moving across a screen as the orchestra swells. It’s cinematic magic bottled up in six minutes. This isn’t background music; it demands your attention. Then there’s “Canto Basco,” which hits differently. It’s softer but no less powerful, blending choral elements with traditional Basque influences. There’s a rawness here, a sense of longing that feels deeply human. Listening to it feels like standing alone on a windswept hill, staring out at something vast and unknowable. It’s haunting yet beautiful—exactly what makes Morricone’s work timeless. The credits read like a who’s who of talent: Morricone himself conducting, composing, even directing. Liner notes by Sergio Bassetti add context, while remastering by M. Cirulli ensures the sound stays crisp decades later. Every detail matters, from S. Marcotulli’s recording to the final mix. It’s clear this wasn’t slapped together—it was lovingly built. What strikes me most about Ogro is how personal it feels despite being tied to visuals we may never see. Tracks like “In Fondo Al Tunnel” or “Flashback” evoke vivid imagery all on their own. They remind us why Morricone’s scores transcend their original purpose—they’re not just accompaniments; they’re standalone works of art. Here’s the thing, though: listening to Ogro feels like eavesdropping on history. Released during a time when film scores were often overlooked as mere accessories, this album proves otherwise. It’s bold, unapologetic, and dripping with character. Honestly? I kinda wish more modern composers took notes from Morricone’s playbook. So yeah, if you’re looking for something that’ll grab you by the soul and shake you around a bit, give Ogro a spin. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself lost in its depths for hours. After all, great music doesn’t just play—it lingers.

Ennio Morricone (Italian pronunciation: ) was an italian composer (born 10 November 1928, Rome, Italy - died 6 July 2020, Rome, Italy). A favourite pupil of , he also deputized secretly for his trumpeter father in a light music orchestra. He thus developed two distinct sides to his musical personality: one of these led him to embrace serialism and the experimental work of the improvisation group ; the other gained him a leading role, principally as an arranger, in all types of mass-media popular music, including songs for radio, radio and television plays, and the first successful television variety shows. After many minor cinematic collaborations, Morricone achieved wider recognition with 's series of four Westerns. There followed important collaborations with directors such as , , , , , and . Despite inevitable self-repetitions over a total of more than 400 film scores, his work provides many examples of a highly original fusion of classical and popular idioms. Morricone's non-film works form a large and increasingly widely performed part of his output. Many of them use his technique of micro-cells, a pseudo-serial approach often incorporating modal and tonal allusions, which, with its extreme reduction of compositional materials, has much in common with his film-music techniques. Among honours, he won the Academy Award in 2016 for his score to 's The Hateful Eight and has received five Academy Award nominations between 1979 and 2001, a Grammy and a Leone d'oro, and was awarded the Laurea ad Honorem by the University of Cagliari. Between 1991 and 1996 he taught film music at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, Siena.
