Kickstarts by Example: A Genre-Bending Dancefloor Odyssey That Still Kicks (and Starts) Released in 2010, Kickstarts by Example isn’t just an album—it’s a passport to a sweaty European club night where everyone’s wearing neon and pretending they’re cooler than they actually are. With genres spanning Pop and Electronic, and styles dipping into Europop, House, Dubstep, and even Hip-House, this record feels like a chaotic yet oddly cohesive playlist someone threw together after one too many espresso martinis. And honestly? It works. Let’s dive into the chaos. The title track, “Kickstarts,” is the star of the show, remixed so many times it’s practically its own genre. You’ve got the BAR9 Remix, which sounds like what happens when robots discover funk; the Wideboys Stadium Mix, perfect for pretending you’re at a football match but with better vibes; and the Afrojack Remix, because why not throw some Dutch electro wizardry into the mix? Each version feels like meeting an old friend who’s had a personality transplant—familiar, but weirdly exciting. But if I had to pick one remix that sticks in my brain like gum on a shoe, it’s the BAR9 Vocal Mix. This thing hits harder than your ex’s apology text. The bassline growls like a grumpy cat, while Example’s vocals glide over the top like he’s casually strolling through a rave. It’s got that perfect blend of euphoria and edge, making you want to simultaneously cry and fist-pump. Also, whoever thought adding robotic glitches to a pop song was a good idea deserves a medal—or at least a free drink at the bar. Another standout is the Fenech-Soler Remix, which turns “Kickstarts” into a glittery synth-pop banger. It’s the kind of track that makes you feel invincible, like you could conquer the world or at least finish your laundry without procrastinating. Fenech-Solers clearly understood the assignment here: take something already great and sprinkle it with disco fairy dust. What’s wild about Kickstarts is how it manages to sound both timeless and totally 2010. Listening to it now feels like scrolling through an old MySpace page—you’re hit with waves of nostalgia, cringe, and admiration all at once. Plus, the sheer number of remixes means there’s literally a version for every mood. Need motivation? Go for the Extended Mix. Feeling mellow? Try the Instrumental Edit. Want to lose your mind entirely? Hit play on the Bar9 Remix. The credits read like a who’s who of music industry talent: Sub Focus producing, Steven Eaves snapping moody photos, and Kamaleonts doing artwork that probably looked super edgy back in the day. Even the labels involved—Ministry of Sound, Data Records, Embassy of Music—are like a United Nations of dance music coolness. So, would I recommend Kickstarts? Absolutely. It’s messy, ambitious, and occasionally feels like it was made by committee—but isn’t that life? In a way, this album is less about perfection and more about capturing the energy of a moment. And let’s be real, sometimes you don’t need perfection. Sometimes you just need a beat loud enough to drown out your existential dread. Final thought: If Example ever releases a sequel called Restart, I’ll be first in line. But only if they promise another BAR9 Remix. Those guys really know how to kickstart… well, everything.

About Example

Elliot John Gleave (born 20 June 1982), better known by his stage name Example, is an English singer and rapper signed to Data Records. His name arose due to his initials being E.G., which is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase exempli gratia ("for example"). Elliot Gleave was born at a West London hospital in Hammersmith, the elder of two children, and attended All Saints Primary School in Fulham. He later went on to attend ADT College (now Ashcroft Technology Academy) in Wandsworth. Gleave has claimed in interviews that the main reason he started rapping was due to his introduction to hip-hop through albums by Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dogg the latter's album purchased primarily for "the cool cover art".
