Badlands - Flame Still Burning

Album Review: Flame Still Burning by Badlands (2014) If you’re into raw, unfiltered rock with a punk edge and some serious attitude, Flame Still Burning by Badlands is worth your time. Released in 2014 via Rebellion Records out of the Netherlands, this album feels like a love letter to rock ‘n’ roll’s rebellious roots. It blends genres like Rock & Roll, Oi, Punk Revival, and even throws in a dash of American Trad Rock for good measure. Produced, mixed, and mastered by Joshua Dutrieux and L. Smits, it’s got that gritty, punchy sound that makes you wanna crank up the volume. Now, let me tell ya—this isn’t one of those polished, overproduced albums where every note feels calculated. Nope. It's messy, loud, and full of heart, which honestly makes it way more fun to listen to. There are live tracks sprinkled throughout, giving it an authentic, sweaty-bar-gig vibe. The credits list Victor Nefkens as the songwriter, and dude clearly knows how to write tunes that stick with ya. Two tracks that really stood out for me? First off, “Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Sounds simple, right? But man, it’s such a banger. The energy hits you right away—it’s fast, catchy, and feels like the kind of song you’d shout along to while crowd-surfing. You can almost picture the band smashing their instruments at the end of the set. It’s got this timeless quality, like it could’ve been written in the '70s or last week. Either way, it’s impossible not to headbang along. Then there’s “Nation of Sorrow.” This one slows things down just enough to let the lyrics sink in. It’s heavy—not just musically but emotionally too. The vocals have this raspy desperation that pairs perfectly with the pounding drums and guitar riffs. There’s something haunting about it, like it’s telling a story you can’t quite shake off. When they bust out the live version later on the album, it feels even bigger, like the whole room is singing along. Goosebumps stuff, honestly. What’s cool about this album is how it balances studio polish with raw live energy. Tracks like “It’s Gonna End (Live)” and “Fight Until You Die (Live)” remind you why live music is unbeatable. You can hear the crowd cheering, the band feeding off that energy—it’s electric. And yeah, sure, there are repeats of certain songs in both studio and live versions, but instead of feeling redundant, it adds depth. Like seeing two sides of the same coin. One thing I didn’t expect? How much I appreciated the artwork and layout by Tim v/d Kimmenade. The photos by Peter v/d Wijst and Vincent Van Der Hoogen give the whole package this DIY punk aesthetic that matches the music perfectly. Even Robin Cornelissen’s remastering job deserves a shoutout because everything sounds crisp without losing its rough-around-the-edges charm. So, would I recommend Flame Still Burning? Absolutely. Whether you’re into classic Rock & Roll, Punk Revival, or just looking for something with bite, this album delivers. Honestly, it’s refreshing to hear a band wear their influences on their sleeve without trying too hard to reinvent the wheel. Random thought: If this album were a person, it’d probably be covered in tattoos, sipping cheap beer at a dive bar, and telling wild stories from tour buses. And honestly? That’s exactly the kind of friend we all need in our playlists.
