Fats Waller Art Tatum - Les Rois Du Piano

Les Rois Du Piano: A Ragtime Jazz Masterpiece That Still Hits Home If you’re into jazz with a ragtime twist, Les Rois Du Piano by Fats Waller and Art Tatum is one of those albums that just sneaks up on you. Released in 1975 under Disques Carrere in France, this record feels like sitting in a smoky Parisian café while two legends duke it out on the keys. It’s got charm, soul, and enough personality to fill a room twice its size. Now, let me tell ya—this album isn’t perfect (what is?), but man, does it make an impression. The tracklist reads like a love letter to jazz standards, packed with tunes like “Begin The Beguine,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’.” But there are two tracks that stuck with me long after the needle lifted off the vinyl. First up, “Sweet Lorraine.” Oh, man. This one hits different. Art Tatum takes the melody and runs wild with it, weaving these impossibly intricate riffs while still keeping the heart of the song alive. You can almost picture him leaning back at the piano, grinning as his fingers fly across the keys faster than your brain can process. It’s playful, tender, and kinda makes you wish you were falling in love right then and there. Every time I hear it, I think about lazy Sunday mornings where everything feels slow and golden. Classic vibe. Then there’s “Handful Of Keys.” Fats Waller owns this track like it was made for him—and honestly, maybe it was. From the first note, it’s clear he’s having the time of his life. There’s something so raw and joyful about how he attacks the keys—it’s not just music; it’s a conversation. Listening to this tune feels like being let in on some kind of secret joke only jazz fans get. It’s messy, unpredictable, and utterly brilliant. If walls could dance, mine would’ve been doing the Charleston by now. What strikes me most about Les Rois Du Piano is how alive it feels. Even though it came out in ’75, decades after both artists had passed, their energy leaps through the speakers like they’re performing live just for you. Ragtime jazz has this way of making you feel nostalgic for moments you never even lived through—and this album nails it. But here’s the kicker: listening to this record reminds me why we bother with music in the first place. Life gets loud, complicated, and messy—but when you hit play on something like Les Rois Du Piano, all that fades away. For a few minutes, it’s just you, the piano, and a couple of geniuses who refuse to be forgotten. And honestly? That’s worth more than any five-star review.

American jazz pianist, organist, composer and comedic entertainer (born 21 May 1904 in Harlem, New York, USA - died 15 December 1943 in a Santa-Fé-Express near Kansas City, Missouri, USA (bronchial pneumonia). One of the most popular jazz performers of his era. Thomas Wright Waller was the youngest of four children born to Adaline Locket Waller and the Reverend Edward Martin Waller. He started playing the piano when he was six and graduated to the organ of his father's church four years later. At the age of fourteen he was playing the organ at Harlem's Lincoln Theater and within twelve months he had composed his first rag. Waller's first piano solos ("Muscle Shoals Blues" and "Birmingham Blues") were recorded on October 1922 in Race Records when he was 18 years old. He was the prize pupil, and later friend and colleague, of stride pianist James P. Johnson. Fats Waller was the son of a preacher and learned to play the organ in church with his mother. Overcoming opposition from his clergyman father, Waller became a professional pianist at 15, working in cabarets and theaters. In 1918 he won a talent contest playing Johnson's "Carolina Shout
