Live at Dorpscafe Horn NL 30 March 1972 – Focus Rips It Up Alright, let’s get straight to the point. If you’re into Prog Rock and haven’t heard Live at Dorpscafe Horn NL 30 March 1972 by Focus, then what the hell are you even doing with your life? This ain’t no studio-polished snooze fest—it’s raw energy crammed into one wild night in some tiny Dutch café. The album's got guts, grit, and enough weirdness to keep things interesting from start to finish. First off, "Hocus Pocus." Yeah, that track everyone knows—or thinks they do. But this live version? Holy crap, it slaps harder than any recording I’ve ever heard. Thijs van Leer just goes OFF on his flute solo like he’s trying to summon a damn wizard or something. And don’t even get me started on Pierre van der Linden’s drumming—he’s pounding those skins so hard you’d think they owed him money. Then there’s the yodeling bit (yeah, YODELING). Sounds ridiculous, right? But somehow, it works. Like, REALLY works. By the time they hit the reprise later in the set, you’re not bored—you’re ready for more. How does that even happen? Then there’s “Sylvia,” which is basically the opposite vibe but equally unforgettable. It’s smooth as hell, dripping with emotion, and Jan Akkerman’s guitar work here is just… chef’s kiss. Seriously, dude makes every note count without overdoing it. You can practically feel the smoke-filled room and hear glasses clinking while people lose their minds because THIS ISN’T JUST MUSIC; IT’S AN EXPERIENCE. When the organ kicks in halfway through, it’s like being punched in the soul—in a good way. The rest of the tracks hold up too—“Eruption” sets the tone with its chaotic brilliance, and “House of the King” feels like medieval prog rock gone rogue. Even the weird-ass title “Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers!” doesn’t feel out of place once you dive in. These guys weren’t messing around—they were making statements. But here’s the kicker: why isn’t this show legendary? Like, stadium-level famous? Sure, it was in some random village bar, but holy hell, if this performance doesn’t make you wanna smash your speakers and scream “PLAY IT AGAIN,” nothing will. Maybe it’s better this way though—kept under wraps for those who actually care about real music instead of whatever garbage dominates playlists today. So yeah, go listen to this beast of an album. Just don’t blame me when your brain explodes all over the place. Oh, and next time someone asks you about great concerts, tell ‘em about Dorpscafe Horn. They won’t know what hit ‘em.

Dutch rock group centered around flutist and vocalist and guitarist in their original incarnation (1969-1976). The music is influenced by classical music, as heard in their signature song, the baroque style inspired "Hocus Pocus". The majority of their work is instrumental, like their biggest hit, "Sylvia". In the early 2000s, the band reformed with van Leer as the only member from previous line-ups; however he was soon joined by on drums who had been a member in the 1970s. Since reforming, they have toured constantly and released four albums of new material, the latest being 2018's .
