Album Review: Franco Présente Simaro Massiya Of TPOK Jazz Released in 1985, Franco Présente Simaro Massiya Of TPOK Jazz is a vibrant showcase of African musical brilliance. This album, produced under the Kenyan label Edipop Production and distributed by V.I.S.A. 1980, captures the essence of Soukous—a genre that blends traditional African rhythms with infectious dance grooves. Led by the legendary Franco (François Luambo Makiadi) and his iconic Orchestre TPOK Jazz, this record highlights the immense talent of Simaro Massiya, one of the band’s key composers and vocalists. The album doesn’t waste time setting the mood. From the opening notes of “Faute Ya Commercant,” listeners are treated to a masterclass in storytelling through music. The track explores themes of greed and moral decay within commerce, delivered with Simaro’s smooth yet commanding voice. What makes it unforgettable is how the rhythm section locks into place—tight, hypnotic, and impossible not to move to. It’s the kind of song that sticks with you long after the needle lifts off the vinyl. Another standout track is “Mbongo - Money - L’argent.” As its title suggests, it dives deep into the universal obsession with wealth. But instead of preaching, Simaro crafts a narrative that feels personal yet relatable. The interplay between the guitars and percussion creates an almost trance-like effect, while the layered harmonies add depth without overshadowing the message. You can’t help but nod along as the lyrics remind us of money’s double-edged sword. Tracks like “Mandola” and “Nganga Lopango Batekisa” round out the album with their own unique flavors, each showcasing the band’s ability to seamlessly blend intricate arrangements with raw emotion. While these songs may not grab you immediately, repeated listens reveal hidden gems in their melodies and phrasing. What strikes me most about this album is its authenticity. There’s no attempt to cater to Western tastes or dilute the African sound for broader appeal. Instead, Franco and Simaro let their roots shine, creating something both timeless and deeply rooted in culture. Listening to it feels like stepping into a lively Congolese nightclub in the mid-80s—minus the sticky floors and spilled drinks. Reflecting on Franco Présente Simaro Massiya Of TPOK Jazz, I’m reminded of how music transcends borders. Even though the lyrics might be in Lingala or French, the emotions conveyed need no translation. And honestly? If this album doesn’t make you want to get up and dance, maybe check your pulse—you might be part robot.
